I was leaving my neighborhood to go to the store and saw one of the houses that sits on the entrance to the neighborhood had a confederate flag flying on the flag pole.

This flag was not up Sunday, it was not up monday, it was not up tuesday and I am pretty fucking sure it was not up yesterday either. So, while just about everyone else is flying the real american flag or no flag at all this asshole decides to put up the confederate battle flag.

Sorry to bring this whole discssion up again but that was one of the most disrespectful and disgusting things I have seen in a fairly long time.

A separatist eh?

This guy probably could not even spell that word.

Just a drunk redneck without a clue.

I guess it all depends on what you associate that flag with. I’m not American. I associate that particular flag with the Dukes of Hazard and the Southern States of America. It’s not purely a war icon to me. The St George Cross (the English red cross on a white background flag) doesn’t particularly annoy me as a Scot, even though if Scotland were to play England at football (the game which has players kick the ball with their feat :) ) all you’d see in the English fans would be St George Crosses and if you went back in time to a battle between Scotland and England you’d see the same thing.

I find that sort of thing annoying also. I wouldn't ever suggest he not be able to do such a thing because I do believe in freedom of speech. Unfortunate when that expression is inciteful of intolerance and hate.

I say this because I associate the flag with slavery and the KKK but I know there are folks who would feel that sporting the confederate flag is a way to be proud of their southern heritage. Some people also manage to fool themselves that they're not bigots when they are.

So your neighbor's probably pretty numb, Azwed. I wouldn't put too much effort into being pissed off about him:rose:

Sorry if this offends anyone...

I live in the South and I've made an observation. I see many confederate flags in front of houses and on trucks. I usually see these flags outside of trailers and little shacks, and on trucks with monster wheels. I don't see confederate flags in the front yards of brick homes in nice neighborhoods, or on nice cars. Like I said, this is an observation I've made in my neck of the woods.
In most cases, I associate the displaying of a confederate flag, with people with a redneck mentality.

Mmmm, Daisy in cut offs . . .

I'm confused though - why is the confederate flag disrespectful on independece day, aren't they totally seperate issues?

Well, everyone has the right to fly whatever flag they want.

That is one of the freedoms we celebrate today.

The freedom of expression.

So, let him have his way.........
even if it is inappropriate.

Are you free to burn it now if you want, without being arrested?

:)

I though Independence day was to celebrate the breaking of ties to a Europe which didn't respect the settlers wishes.

Nah...

Independence Day is to celebrate the time you could at last vote for people like Bush.

Why people choose to fly the Confederate flag is there business, Not mine. Remember, its all about tolarance and diversity. The acceptance of other peoples culture. At least thats what I've been told the last 10 years or so. But maybe that tolarance doesnt apply when it comes to white southern families who fly the flag.

I normaly don't have a problem with someone flying the flag at their house but on the 4th of july I do. I think it is incredibly disrespectful and in case you missed it this guy was not flying it before the 4th it was only up today and I bet it will be down tomorrow.

I don't see the flag as necessarily representing racism/slavery/lynching and such. I think it depends on the context in which it is presented. Flying the flag from a poll on your house is different from displaying a flag privately in your house, which is different from having the flag on a vehicle.

If i see someone with the flag on their car or truck or motorcycle then I am going to assume they are dumb, worthless, redneck racists and you can talk about how I am not respecting their diversity all you want. I will tell you to eat shit and die.

The other two examples are different and I don't feel the same way about them. The other two examples are more in the private sphere then having the flag on a vehicle.

Now if you see the flag as only representing racism/slavery, and I can understand how people feel that way, then I don't think they have to respect what they see as racism.

Just for contrast, you can take out everything else and leave separatism: In Hawaii, the separatists fly the American flag upside down. Sure, they hate the "damn haoles," but there's no slavery involved, and it's mostly a political issue. I could go into a little depth on Hawaiian soveriegnity, but basically I still find it a little offensive, even outside the Fourth of July.

The flag is a symbol from a bygone ERA. If the clown wanted to fly it today so what? Its his right to do so. And, it is, about diversity, it is just a diversity that you fail to acknowledge because you find it offensive. You have already "prejudged" anyone who has the symbol on there car/bike as "worthless rednecks" who are you to make that determination? And I thought we werent suppose to judge others behavior. Something else that I've been told for the last 10 years.

In most cases, I associate the displaying of a confederate flag, with people with a redneck mentality.

Some people are proud they live in the south. Not everyone associates the confederate flag with slavery and the KKK, many associate it with a gentile lifestyle that is uniquely southern. That lifestyle places a strong emphasis on family, relationships, and hard work (with balance) (not to mention peach cobbler).

There are many Scots in the south and this Scottish legacy is one of the pillars of southern culture. I've read that many believe the "southern twang" is in large part Scottish in origin. In many ways the north/south relationship is similar to the English/Scottish thing. Do people in England get uptight when the Scottish flag is flown?

Until recently (it still might be...I haven't lived near Georgia for a while), the confederate battle flag was part of the Georgia State flag. By any chance was this flag flying in Georgia?

I can tell you that in the Heart of Dixie, the tall white columns in those nicer neighborhoods are no less a symbol of the south than the battle flag, maybe just a wee bit more subtle.

You are clueless please shut up.

Everyone judges people based on their behavior. If you see a group of people acting very immature you will assume they are immature. If you see some people acting like jackasses you will assume they are jackasses.

You might be wrong of course, they could be neither immature or jackasses most of the time, but at that time they are because that is how they are acting.

Racism is not a diversity that should be respected.

P.S. I'm flying two sets of stars and strips out front now. I had several relatives die in the Revolutionary War.

Im clueless? Look in the mirror pal. People can act anyway they want within the boundries of the law. If someone wants to fly the flag so FUCKING what. Its their business, not mine not yours. If they fly it because of the racial aspect, again its their right to believe whatever they want. Regardless of how fucked up it is to you or me.
