They are in the pockets of lobbyists because nobody who isn't can get anywhere. That does not mean they got into politics for cynical reasons. If you find this situation unacceptable, the solution is to make all campaign spending illegal. Make it like in France, where every candidate gets an equal allotment of free television time. Then they would not need donors, therefore would not need lobbyists.

But the two parties are NOT the same, and it makes a real difference which wins elections. The lesser of two evils is still evil . . . but also still lesser. Ever since 1932, things in general in America have almost always gone better with Dems in charge -- the sole exception being Carter, and his time was a clusterfuck mainly for reasons entirely beyond his control, and he really is grossly underrated -- no Republican could have brought Israel and Egypt together, or wanted to.
