Somehow I screwed up...

I spent the majority of my day writing my story. I submitted it for publication and it showed pending. A day or two later, while checking the status, I realize that the category was wrong, so I changed it. When I hit save, suddenly half the story was gone! It's currently in drafts as I'm afraid to republish it. Is there any way to recover my entire story?

I figured. I don't mind rewriting it exactly, it's more that I have no clue how it happened. I think I'll copy what's left, finish it outside the editor as you suggested, and go from there. Thank you.

I have been using computers for 40 years and I am pretty good with them. My day job is getting the best out of systems. Still, things go wrong. Twice already this year I have had issues that baffle me.

Save what you can and move on.
