A major surprise! (Yes, I know that it's Espaňa, not Spain.)

Netherlands 5

Spain 1

Final

The Dutch are a hell of a team this year. I'm not shocked. Quality finishing and attacking football.

Now, personally, I am a long-standing Argentina fan. We have home continent advantage. I like our odds.

Ar-hen-tina! Ar-hen-tina!

I'm still on the Stanley Cup. For a few more hours at a minimum. :)

Meanwhile - in the real hockey world cup in the Netherlands, the home team has got both its mens and womens teams into the final and both will be playing Australia. The Australians will be slight favourites for the mens title, but the Dutch women are almost certainties to win against an Australian team which was very lucky to get past USA in the semis (on penalties)

Its been a really good Hockey world cup hasn't it. Our Aussie girls haven't made to the finals in a lot of years but I think they can take the Dutch team as can our men :D
Having said that I am truly shocked New Zealand didn't far better this year.

What is embarrassing though is our country's need to put roo on the end of everything when naming a sporting team, we have the hockeyroo's in one world cup and the Soccerroo's in the other. Good grief.

This is hilarious.

Watching here with an England fan, it's all the 'beautiful game' ... until the penalty shootout :D

I'm a little partial to the Ticos because I've been to Costa Rica and I dream of the day I can go back.

Aww, RR, we gurrllzzz are just being naughty bringing our girl-y films and popcorn in here.

You know it's just cuz I am a rugby fan so I think the footballers ... sorry soccer players are all pretty boys. ;)

I will wear my red feathers and huly-huly skirt while I talk soccer a bit.
:rose:

Spain were playing really beautifully at first but the Dutch just tore them apart in the second half. That first goal by Van Persie was absolutely beautiful - balletic.

We can be girlie and talk futball/football/soccer!

Was that goal the header? That was amazing.

For the girlie movie, I'll bring the popcorn and the chocolate. Actually, Naoko, get that tea flavored chocolate with the lemon bits. The Prestat? So yum.

I feel I should like rugby more than I do. Don't get me wrong, I like the sport and admire the athleticism and toughness of the players. But all the rules and laws of the game just... baffle me.

You're right about that Van Persie header, that was tremendous. The pass to him was just as great.

OK, carry on with your girl-y movie watching!

I'm having a World Cup party with international foods and team themed cocktails and shots. I'm such a dork, but I am crazy stoked about it.

Kimchi ought to be one of your surprise dishes...S. Korea (in group H with Russia and Belgium) will come out of the group and as far as the semi finals.

I have difficulty watching a sport which may provide not a single highlight for ESPN because nothing happened! :D

Seriously, it just doesn't do it for me, but I get that an awful lot of people love it. To those, enjoy the cup and good luck to your team!

Gosh, I haven't even tried it myself! I must buy lots of bars and give it a go *nom nom nom*.

That van Persie header was truly beautiful!

As for rugby, I think I have a thread somewhere in which I explain to some of the gurrlzzzz the appeal of a game full of muscular men who frequently go down together in a scrum, hookers, an odd-shaped ball ...

I caught the Colombia - Greece match yesterday. The Colombians were really just playing with poor Greece! That final goal was hilarious, when they kicked the ball between a defender's legs, then someone back-pedaled it, and then they kicked it between another defender's legs and into the back of the net. The Greeks played like each of them were carrying the country's national debt on their shoulders.

Ooops, I just saw the England - Italy score. Better get in consolatory breakfast foodstuffs, LOL.
