Kent State Scrambles to Retrieve Revealing Sports Calendars

(U-WIRE) KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State athletic marketing department is scrambling to remove fall sports calendars that contain a photograph revealing an Eastern Michigan soccer player's vaginal region.
The photograph, which measures two inches by three inches and is centered at the top of the poster, shows Kent State defender Kristin Meister battling an Eastern Michigan player for the ball. The Eastern Michigan player's shorts are hiked up at an angle that show her genitalia in the photograph.
"We missed it," athletic director Laing Kennedy said. "I didn't know about it until last Thursday, and once it was brought to my attention, I made the decision to pull the posters off the shelves and take them down wherever we had distributed them."
Posters that were displayed across campus have been taken down and will be replaced by new posters that will be reprinted within two weeks. The cost of reprinting is $1,200 and will come out of the athletic department's marketing budget. The posters contained three commercial ads from Huntington Banks, Ramada Inn of Kent and Rockne's restaurant. The advertisers will be credited the ads they bought.
Ramada Inn manager Dwight Leasters said the photograph should not hurt the hotel's relationship with the university.
"This isn't a situation we're going to take advantage of," he said. "We've always had a good relationship with the athletic department."
Sports information director Will Roleson said the error was found when an unidentified person calling from a dorm notified the athletic department of the photograph.
"It is what it is," Roleson said of the photograph. "We certainly don't want that poster to be representative of the athletic department. It's blatant, but by no means was it done on purpose."
Kennedy said the poster was seen by several members of the athletic department staff before it was printed.
"Should we have caught it? Yes, no question," Kennedy said. "Ultimately I have to take responsibility, and I do. It should have been caught three or four times. I sure didn't catch it, and I approved the poster."
