So....

It is self-cancelling to say one is Republican and Gay. Almost like combining Rush Limbaugh with Liberalism, willful ignorance with logic, etc.

The political agenda in politics is to gain votes, raise taxes, and to campaign for it over and over at any expense. What else is new?

But my question is whatever happened to the separation of church & state? Civil rights vs religous rights vs hypocritical politicians.

Maybe Mr. Koering should have stayed in his walk-in closet.

Gay or straight, he's a politician. He knows if he votes his heart, he won't get re-elected by his conservative supporters. Therefore, he is a pussy and a hypocrite.

On one hand, I think his reasoning is flawed. Straight people aren't afraid to flaunt their agendas (CA's Prop 8). Why should we? Yes, gay or not, he's a politician and he knows which way the wind is blowing.

On the other hand, one does have to pick his or her battles. I was dumbfounded when Prop 8 passed... I mean, the CA Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to have a law that bans same-sex marriage. So what do they do? They changed the constitution! That's going pretty far, and demonstrates the length heteros will go to make sure we in the GLBT remain unaccepted. So when a political leader feels like the sacrifice (his career) is not worth the battle (against a windmill), that politician might feel they can do more good in other areas by not throwing themselves on their sword.

I disagree with that, of course. There's no way this guy believes gay marriage should remain outlawed (unless the whole gay thing was a gimmick to get himself elected as the republican's pet gay guy). So the people who voted for him shouldn't be surprised if he votes for gay marriage, and he shouldn't alter his vote to please the greater number of constituents. He should vote how he feels is in the best interest of his constituents. That's why we call them leaders though most of them don't deserve that title).

I also disagree that one cannot be gay and a republican. I'm politically conservative (on the issues of taxes, big government, foreign affairs and the like), but I am socially liberal. I typically vote republican because politicians have (or should have) more influence in the areas where I am conservative than they do in the areas where I am liberal. Now technically I'm not considred gay, but I could be. How did this get to be all about me?
