I have a very, very, very good friend there - VP of public relations. Was at a pool party out on the Chesapeake Bay with her and other friends not long ago.

I told her I thought it was elitist. I listen to it quite frequently, as do my folks, my in-laws and many of my friends.

All educated white folks - generally with decent bank accounts.

I don't work with those types of folks however - and nobody I know through work listens to NPR. And I don't think it necessarily because they are not educated. I think it's because the programming - the information provided by NPR - is created for white people of leveled success.

There's not anything there for anyone else.

To me it's WMPR - White Money Public Radio.

By the way - this VP friend of mine - is a black woman.

What's yer take?.

I think you're probably too much of a narrow-minded simpleton to appreciate most of what gets broadcast on NPR.

I think it's excellent. Well balanced, thorough, informative, interesting, unique, and gets out bloodstains.

You boob.

I didn't say I did not like NPR - I just don't think there's anything 'National' about it - it doesn't represent 'the entire' nation.

Just my opinion but I thinks it's pretty obvious.

I guess that you're so smart that it's obvious how great NPR is - huh?

I don't know - I listen enough.

They really stretch it sometimes - there's a bunch of filler - lots on weekends.

And the pay scale over there really sucks - the stringer pay is even worse - not really that much talent. A graveyard of has beens and never beens.

I think it shows - I hear it. A lot of time to fill and when nothing's happening - like now in summer - bullshit stories on nothing fluff.

Sometimes it sounds like the writer simply wants to hear his or herself on the air.

Nah - it ain't no Jim McNeal. Not close.

I listen to npr alot....

I don't think it is necessarily elitist. It just depends on what you like to listen to when you are driving or what not.

You don't think there are white folks with money across the nation?

Can you show me any agency in broadcasting that specifically focuses on people with no money to spend? Who would pay for that? Who would advertise there? Why would anybody care to tune in, and be reminded of their poverty?

Do you complain because you need something that only they can give, or are you jealous of the people with decent bank accounts?

I never said it was "great". I enjoy it, and I think it's a good source of news, along with lots of other sources. I think a lot of the editorial content is liberal or left-leaning, but that's okay.

It's obvious that you think it's snobby...you called it elitist, you said it's "for white people of leveled success" whatever the fuck that means.

National means it is broadcast nationally...not that every person in the "nation" will like it or think it represents the way they think the news should be reported.

npr is my favorite place to get news and information.

They don't just inform. They educate.

NPR doesn't play Metallica. Muffie doesn't enjoy radio stations that do not play Metallica. When I want opinionated jabber, I tune in the StudMuffin or Lit.

I'm trying to think of a more thorough news source on the radio:

On some stations someone like ABC News will break in with the latest crisis somewhere, give you a five-second sound-byte, and three more stories, one sentence per topic, all of this in a one minute period interupted by a message about oral laxatives. Other than Paul Harvey, I would say most radio news is about as informative as a car whizzing by.

Unless you listen to talk radio, and you sure can learn a lot from people who have nothing better to do than to sit on the phone awaiting their turn on the air. And hosts like Rush Limbaugh always make sure you're getting a good, balanced report. I was listening to him again yesterday, why, I don't really know, but he had a caller that dared take an opposing view of something, and sure enough, once again the caller was cut off. It scares me that people get most of their information from sources like these. It doesn't surprise me, but it still gives me concern.

Some of the stories on NPR are boring, some are mildly fascinating, but since when is news supposed to entertain? This is why I rarely watch television news anymore, the line between news and entertainment has all but disappeared, news stories have background music and slow-motion cameras. Fuck that. Why the old-timers in journalism aren't screaming bloody murder is beyond me. Take your Zantac and shove it in your asses, you sensationalist, money-grubbing, ratings-watching newsmakers. You suck!

I want my NPR.

I don't get the "white people with money" thing. They broadcast about everything from Jazz to NASA to Africa with a variety of represented voices and well written copy. I have no patience for people who think that competency and grammar are the provence of the elite.

Dixon, it's Sparky. Remember?

LOL I know. Sparky's okay. He's more instigator than acolyte. I'm reacting more to the current Congressional complaining about NPR from one of the Silly Right (as opposed to the Wacky Left) who's annoyed that NPR is too liberal and wants Congress to make them see the Right Light.

I've heard Metalica on NPR. With an interview!

We (my station) aren't NPR but we work with a ton of NPR stations. Yes it leans left, and if you think is for the wealthy you're nuts. Yes we all have our benefactors, but most of the money that keeps NPR and Community stations afloat comes in the form of $20-$100 checks from listeners.

Boring? Yeah ok there's quite a bit of spoken word programming that will lull your shnauzer to sleep, but the music is original and the news, though again, leaning left, is much more informative than anything on commercial radio.

NPR rocks.

I think it's a little conservative, but otherwise it's wonderful.

Basically, the reason dumb people don't like it is they're stupid.

Stupid people have tons of stuff to watch and listen to. Why should they get to take over NPR?

I listen to NPR quite often.
I enjoy it above all other news sources and music stations.
Then again, I don't watch TV. So, I'm just a freak. :D

Erm. Cross posted again.

I heard an interview with Marylin Manson once on NPR. I just about wet my pants.

And I still say the news programming's a little right wing. But I can live with it.

Narcoleptic Prozac Radio....

I tune in sometimes, but like any station, if it's boring I go back to my thrash metal stations! :D

The reasson I say that is......

that by far and away - white people listen to NPR. And check out the sponsors - white corporate America.

And look around - white people listen - other's pretty much don't. Not many cabbies (great listner's of politically oriented left swaying news) NPR's generally not left enough for them.

I listen and I'm white - but just because it's about the only half assed, balanced - mostly news, in more depth than most, radio out there - does not mean it can't be critisized. I often think the stories are stretched. I often think the subject matter, particularly when not very newsey, is stretched. I mean I've listened in disbelief to certain things (crap) they put out there. I heard a story on the 'sonic boom of whip cracking' the other day. And another on how 'race horses are atheletes who strive to win at any cost.'

Interesting? A little - but crap? Sure.

I'm telling ya - they don't pay and 'it shows' in the product.

To me anyway.

And - they program as to where the money is - where they get their money - white people.

Prarie Home Companion, elitest???

Puleeze. Car talk, eletist?? Give me a fucking break. Ther's something on NPR for everyone.
