Do you think we do? I personally don't. Though I do think there's something to be said for young people achieving a certain mental and emotional maturity before engaging. Of course, some people never do attain that maturity.

So what is the idea behind the veneration of Sexual Purity and Virginity? Why do we look on these as good even in this day and age?

It's a mix of things:
1) It's a desperate attempt to keep boys and girls childlike and innocent in this age where they grow up "too fast." Now, admittedly, there is some validity to this, that the kids aren't having a childhood and are jumping right from playing with dolls to playing with each other.

HOWEVER, the people who are after this don't really know much about human culture. Time was that kids did jump from childhood into adulthood pretty much in an instant. The second puberty hit--and pregnancy or impregnating was possible--the kid was an adult and treated as such. WE moderns (that includes the last 200 years or so) are the weirdos who invented this extended adolescence and dressed it up with all kinds of sweetness and "innocence" like holding hands, a first kiss, high school dances, and dates who share milkshakes at the sock hop.

But *THIS* is what this new generation venerating sexuality purity wants. To turn back the clock and magically regain those nostalgic days when little kids stayed little kids for a very long time, and when they became teens, they still remained sweet, ignorant and innocent--rather than putting on low-rise jeans, thongs and getting tramp stamp tattoos. Days when young men were gentlemen and ladies were demure and none of them knew any bad words or what went on in the bedroom. And, of course, parents were totally in charge and in control of their kid's lives (that's VERY important!).

Don't even try to convince these people that past generations weren't altogether like that or that parents didn't have as much control over their kids even back then.

2) It's an attempt by some guys to restore "mystery" to women. These are guys who are into the strip-tease element of girls and they want it back. They want women who dress demurely...so they can undress them. They want women who hold off...so they can convince them. They want the chase, the tease, the promise, the gift to unwrap. They want that "fun" back for themselves. These are guys who are having no fun when they meet women who say, "Okay," when they want to have sex and take off their own clothes.

In other words, as it was back in the days of the Puritans, certain men want to impose their fetishes on all of us

3) As Cloudy and Rob pointed out, other men who can't manage to get to girls first (gosh, I wonder why?), are shouting "No Fair!" and trying to change the rules so that they can have first dibs on the girl rather than being told that five other guys were there before them...and knowing that they have to compete with those old lovers. The know-nothing girl not only allows them first dibs, but also allows them to be a rotten lover. Hey, she doesn't know any better, right.

So the guy gets to claim her as his, gets to be her first, and gets to be her only as well. Win, win, win for the guy. Now, of course, this purity movement is suppose to be for guys also, but this view still holds.

The whole thing sounds like a really, really sucky idea. I was raised in the fifties and I have no fond memories of the time. Some guys have no idea how lucky they are, having females around who know what sex is about and will admit to it, and want to be involved in it.

If guys are supposed to stay chaste also then it's not like it used to be. At one point in time when women staying virginal until marriage was in it's heyday. Men were allowed, encouraged and expected to get as much sex as possible before marriage.

Not only that, men were expected to ride as many women as they could after marriage. Do you really think that slutty bar wenches were for single men? The only people who got any spare time to go into said bar were sailors and generally parents because parents shoved all the work on the kid and went off to do whatever. On a farm, that usually was take mom to the barn and try and have another kid, sometimes take daughter to the barn.

In a city you would get single men in the tavern, pub, hall, etc. etc. on a rare occassion, most of the time the only people to be found in those places are married men, the owner and barman and the slutty wenches, which at least half were not so much slutty as paid, the other half got paid to but they didn't care as much about that. Oh and the sons of said wenches, who generally were the bouncer. Daughters of course were wenches, as soon as mom or the owner said so.

I honestly think these guys calling for a return to values are actually thinking of the values I mention, not this whole stay virginal until wedding night crap.

Encouraging guys to stay chaste is a losing proposition. They won't do it if they can help it, except for a very few.

As I remember it, guys were not actually encouraged to have sex. It was expected they would, boys will be boys sort of thing, and winked at, but not encouraged. Except by other boys, of course. Extra-marital sex by anybody was pretty much frowned on.

Personally, I think that women being aware of their sexuality is much better. It's certainly less hypocritical. Too bad that I was born too late to gain much benefit from it.

Box your not really old enough to see what I am talking about. The heyday of women are virgins until marriage and men aren't is middle ages, when religion was the so called king. Sadly, then as now it only forbade the women from doing anything outside what they say.

Oh they say that all people should not do this and only do this, but the only ones who get in any lasting trouble are women. I mean look at how many priests get in trouble for boning one of the altar boys, but then continue to preach, they just move to a different city and continue doing it. How many nuns who get caught having sex, get to stay a nun? Not with a kid, with an adult who said yes I want you. Even funnier, I recall a priest doing nuns, they get fired, he moves to a different church. Seriously, can you get any more obviously double sided?

Only indirectly. The nuns became possessed by the devil, and they became lost, so they were disposed of. The devil, operating through trhe nuns, then made him do it, and he can still be saved. Of course, in his next post, he will find more nuns or some altar boys who will also make him do terrible things. Poor guy. Sexually abused all his adult life.

I agree with you, whole-heartedly, if that's what they want to do. However, I don't think they should feel any obligation to do so, and I don't think anybody should impose any obligation.
