Not for US only. Applies to all countries with elected positions.

I want:

Integrity & Honesty. To know that they mean what they say and believe in it; not what they're paid to say or coerced into saying.

To watch out for the people, ALL the people whether they agree with them or not. To be responsive to the people's wishes even if it isn't their personal position.

To NOT fall to paid lobbyists and special interest groups unless that position benefits the people at large.

This is good. Especially the part where the elected represents everyone. Politicians should not foment division. I would like a politician who has had an actual life before becoming a representative. I'd like my representative to have earned a paycheck in the private sector at least once in their lives, and not as a lawyer because that's not really work.I'd also like my politician to do it for a short period of time, and then get back to his life

A certain level of competence. You are tasked by your constituents to do a specific and pretty complex job on their behalf. What this means exactly may vary if you're a legislator, an executive or an elected administrator. You should, in blunt terms, not suck at it, whatever it is.

Honesty, integrity, humility and all that is nice. But unless someone's ideology or personality is too toxic, I always tend to root for whoever seems most able to handle the task.

In the UK Parliament by and large that's what you get. There are a few exceptions.

Members of Parliament are elected on a party ticket so they should follow what the party said they would do. In practice, being 'coerced' to follow the party line is rare.

But this part is impossible:

To be responsive to the people's wishes even if it isn't their personal position.

Why? Because the 'people' rarely agree on anything and finding out is difficult. Even a referendum result like Brexit gives mixed messages.

What I want on - not in - most politicians are ropes around their necks, with the other ends of those ropes tied to sturdy tree limbs.

Up With Politicians

Up with politicians! Hang them from the trees.
Cover them with tar and feathers; shoot them in the knees.
Lock them up in prison; throw them in a cell.
Let them know the people think they all belong in Hell.

What’s a politician? Worthy thing to ask.
Never held an honest job or did an honest task.
Studied law in college, studied Poli Sci.
Mostly what they learned is how to tell a better lie.

Some of them want power; some just want to steal.
All of them are looking for a soft and easy deal.
Sign up with a party, both of them the same.
Get their start by working on a candidate’s campaign.

When they back a winner, get a cushy job,
Helping crooked office holders, helping them to rob.
If they have charisma, run for office too,
Get a chance to tell the people what they gotta do.

After many years of being royalty,
Stealing what they can from people just like you and me,
Fin’ly they retire, golden parachute,
Pension money added to a pile of stolen loot.

Up with politicians! Hang them up so high
Don’t put up another day with how they steal and lie.
Take the country back, no mercy to the slime,
Like the way it should have been for all the nation’s time.

So do I ,but rarely see it .

It's not what I want in a politician. It's that I don't want corporate money in politicians' back pockets.

After that's settled, I'll worry about what I want in a politician.

You're never going to get honesty, I'll tell you that right now. No politician is honest.

But to answer your question, I would like a politician who isn't lazy, who actually carries through with at least most of his policies, a politician who seems dedicated to placing a healthcare system for the ENTIRE U.S.A. for each individual, a politician who seems humble and one who is a Democrat!

LOL, good luck with that one.

Going to be difficult in the US and a lot of other places considering the divisions.
