So, prednisone...

I've been on prednisone for as little as 5 days, and I've also done 6 month, 9 month, and 13 months coarses. The five day coarses had no noticeable side effects for me. The long term prednisone use side effects, for me, are pain (my skin hurts, my joints hurt, etc), my face swells up and my cheeks get hard. I gain weight, I have massive acne problems, I get hair on my face and chest, and I turn into the pyscho bitch from hell.

No idea. 3 pills twice a day for the first three days, then two pills twice a day for three days, and then one, etc.



Yeah, she's a wee bit cranky. She's been getting a lot of passes for various things. The crankiness could easily be just because of the pain and general awfulness, but it didn't really start til today (2nd day on pred). She tends to get hit fast and hard by side effects.



Yep, sleepy. Really sleepy. That's a common reaction for her with most meds. If it says "slight drowsiness", she'll be out like a light. If it says "drowsy", she's out for 12 hours.



No complaints about that so far.

The doc recognised the symptoms right away, and a friend of mine said that he's gotten the same reaction to a spider bite around here. It's apparently not uncommon.

The rash is different from the lyme disease rash too. That said, if she does not get better shortly, she will be going back to the doc.

She still has itchiness and joint pain, but neither is severe. Seems like the sleepiness of the past two days is ebbing a bit as well.

my mother was on a short course of this last year for a severe chest infection. She had a very very bad stomach and ended up bleeding out. This was a week or two after taking it. keep your eye open for black and especially tarry looking stools.

Guess what? Yeah, towels, wow, TRESPASS. She got to the point where doing laundry around her was cause for a stabbin.

Allergic Reactions

The reason it is taken as a decreasing amounts is to carefully cause your body to give it up gently.

Its very effective for poison ivy, spider bites, etc. But because it is so effective, it can cause withdrawal symptoms if you quit taking too soon.

I was on a course (7 days) of prednisone this winter. The only thing I have not seen mentioned by other posters that does occur is delayed wound healing. I happened to scene on the last day I took it and noticed that the marks I got took two or three times as long to heal as they normally would. Looked it up on the internet and it is mentioned as a side effect. Just a thought.

Luckily she only missed swallowing one out of the 10 pills, but that one pill made her vomit profusely when it got stuck on the back of her tongue - poor kid.

Mmmm, I've been watching this thread, and I've been thinking that I've taken it before, but wasn't sure.

But yeah, both times I've ended in hospital with asthma, I was given something on the IV, then a lot of ventolin on the nebuliser, and a course of steroids after.

My tapering off included going to halves and then quarters before finishing.

I remember being tired, having no strength, and thus no appetite because I wasn't using any energy.

I pegged that to the fact that a few dyas not being able to breathe taking the wind from my sails, so to speak, but it could have been the meds too...

She's had an appetite, wow. SERIOUS Appetite. As in I've had to tell her that she's had enough food, else she'll eat til she gets sick.

And she's doing vastly better at this point. She's not complained of joint pain for a few days, and very little comments on itching.
