I'm a lousy speller, too
Me, too.
I majored in English. Have a decent command of grammar and syntax. I own a few dictionaries, still I'm a lousy speller. There are words I consistently misspell.
Despite my own failing, it irks me, too, to see obvious errors. I work in a corporate environment. Have had some work published. I don't submit work without proofing it. Even in informal environments, I am conscious of my spelling. I goof, but I make an effort. Why? Because not to, says something about your own standards and affects how others perceive you. I'm all for relaxing and occasionally breaking rules, but perception does matter.
Ever talk with someone and their diction is poor? You notice. Talk with a teen or listen to a rapper, and you're scratching your head? My 6 year-old consistently uses double negatives. Drives me crazy. The point of communication is to be understood. Spelling is one of the things that affects comprehension. Text full of misspelled words makes the reader stop. It interrupts the thought process.
I read folks who take time to be clear. No flames.
Peace,
daughter
It is another thing to be a bad speller and know it. You can do something about it. I do, it is called a dictionary.
I can tell when a word doesn't look right. Be damned if I know what is wrong with it. So I look it up.
