So, my dog just had emergency surgery...

My dog just had this emergency surgery done. His one ear basically turned into a giant blood blister that had to be lanced. It's a big ear, bigger than my hand, and there was well over a cup of blood pooled up in there. The ear was about 4" thick.

Now, we have to keep a tube in it for 2 WEEKS to let the tissue keep draining so the blister does not re-form. 2 WEEKS of a big, giant freaking dog with blood dripping from his ear. One shake and I get a stripe on the ceiling.... It's next to impossible to keep it bandaged 24/7.

So my question, dear Lit members, is:

Does anyone know a good way to get blood out? Off of multiple surfaces?

And Starfish, don't give me some smart assed painting referenced useless dribble..... Well, if you REALLY must.....;)

I'm so sorry to hear that about your poor little pup. Okay, maybe little is a bit of an understatement, but I hope he gets better soon.

For the blood, a dilute mixture of bleach and water will work well for most hard surfaces. If you're dealing with cloth, there's this product called oxyclean that honestly works wonders with most stains. I'm a nurse and it works really great on my uniforms.

Good luck!

when you get blood on cloths/clothes make sure that you wash the area as soon as possible with COLD (!!) water (as cold as possible to remove the protein from the blood) and then use some stain remover :)

hope your doggy will feel better soon :)

Actually baby, I had this same thing happen to Atticus back in November. He had a massive hematoma in his left ear and had to wear a drain for two weeks. He spattered blood and puss (healing fluid of white blood cells) all over the wall next to his bed and all over the place when ever he shook his head.

Amazingly, as Alongcamemary suggested, Oxyclean (that pelletized oxygen cleaner) did take out the stains on the wall, the bed and the carpet. The stuff is very good on many stains. I had a nasty black stain around the handle of the back door to the garage that nothing would remove. Oxyclean took it right away on one whipe over!

You can buy it anywhere now, I think. I know Target sells it. I am thinking a lot of the grocery stores are selling it too. Sam's club is best though, because of price and quantity.

I am sorry about the poochie.

Bosco and Jack send their love. (we decided to keep that name when he wouldn't listen to us otherwise. :) )

Storm, sorry to hear about your dog, sounds like he's not going to be having alot of fun for the next two weeks. Most important thing is to get blood up FAST. Generally, if it starts to dry, you have about twice as much work. Best thing is prevention. Choose a section of where you live that the dog can be comfortable in, and go about stain proofing it as best you can. Over cloth, on furniture, or anywhere else, drape dish rags, or old towels that you can wash in the washing machine. Hopefully, it will be a tile floor, and you can keep a mop and bucket handy. Dog beds, again with a towel. You can also lay painter's drape over it and hold it to the dog bed with clothes pins. Keep the drain clean, that way you won't have any real problems with him wiping the blood off on furniture accidentally. Softly wipe the ear with a warm, damp cloth. You might want to talk to your vet about putting an Elizabethan collar (The plastic that looks like a cone around the dog's neck) to prevent him from scratching. It will also work as somewhat of a spatter sheild, along with saving you from making another trip to the vet to get the drain put back in.

Good Luck!

Hydrogen peroxide gets blood out.

Storm, I'm so sorry about your pup!

I hope he gets better, really soon. :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the great advice, everyone!!

Starfish, you resisted temptation....... Good girl ;) The force is strong in this one......especially considering she's a small ocean creature....... Jack can evolve into Jacoby, so you get the "Obi" in there the ass backwards way........

LadyDarkFire, I would do both of those things, but he's too big for the cone. He's got the biggest one and you have to pull his ears through. With the one ear so damaged it would never get through. We draped towels over his crate so if he's bleeding badly we can lock him in there for a while, but he's too big to isolate otherwise.

Peace:rose:

Storm, if your vet doesn't have the ability to make the collars specific to the animal, you can buy plastic of a certain weight and thickness, and cut it with scissors to create a collar for the dog. We have joint custody of a Wolf/Husky/Akita mix (Long story), and that's what we did when she injured her ear. Again, Good luck
