So many new stories

Today there were so many new Loving Wives stories that several didn't even make it onto page one.
In a sense I feel for the authors who slaved over a hot keyboard only to have their story age out immediately.
Thoughts?

Are you still using the old interface? The new interface shows ten stories by default, but you can expand the page and it lists everything from the last week.

But yeah. I counted 33 stories. That's a lot for one day.

My first thought would be I would think Laurel can see that, and could bump a few to tomorrow which would cause a day delay on them, but they would make the front page.

She didn't which could mean she doesn't care, or maybe stories are auto approved these days and the system just sweeps on through and doesn't count or look at things like number in one category.

Whatever the reason is, its not worth much conversation, nothing changes around here except things no one ever asked to change.

My quick count from the New Stories page was 31 LW stories posted on 2/6/22. There are only 25 slots on the LW new story page suggesting 6 stories were left out. That is a problem with posting in popular categories. If there are over 25 new LW stories one day and day only 10 the next, the moderators could limit the releases the first day and let the rest roll over to the next day. Otherwise there’s not much one can do.

This is only true on the old interface. It's a problem that's already been fixed.

That's true. However, most readers on the site don't have a membership, and still use the old browser. The new browser doesn't even feature a "Hall of Fame" for each category. Instead, you get a list which is usually dominated by recent stories where the authors have locked out voting after giving themselves a 5-star vote.

As I understand it, Laurel sends approved stories into the queue as soon as they have been vetted, and those will go onto the site as soon as their spot in the queue comes up. Series chapters that are submitted all at once will be spaced out in the queue so that they will appear on subsequent days, for example.

The issue is really that there are just so many people submitting stories now. From 2002 to 2005, I think there were usually a dozen to a score of new stories every day -- for the entire site. I used to read almost everything. Now, there's no way I can keep up. I started writing a slew of I/T stories after my first couple did so well, but now that category is just saturated with new stories every day as LW is. Don't get me wrong -- I think it's awesome that so many people are giving it a shot and contributing their work to this site -- but it is becoming increasingly difficult to make a name for yourself here.

You're right, the new interface has no "Hall of Fame," but I don't think your description for what's there is right. What I see is the top list with a few extra stories that I'd guess don't have enough votes to qualify for the top list. If I click on "more popular stories" then I get the top list in its old format.

It isn't just a problem for the writer, it's an issue for the readers I think. Long before I started writing I did read stories here on occasion, but now, I must confess that I don't.

But, on the off chance that I were to get the urge to read something here, looking at some humungous list would be off-putting for me. How do I pick one? All I have is the title. Yeah, there's the score, but I don't really find my tastes accord with the majority of people here. Besides the score on a new story may simply reflect the first few people who happened upon it. A blurb would be a big help, but even then it's overwhelming and easier to just forget the whole thing. Perhaps, I'm the only one who feels this way, but I bet that isn't the case (though I might be the only one to own up to it).

I'm not saying I have a solution for this, since I don't know how you would stop people from submitting stories and I don't know what basis one would use to screen them.

It's one of those things where it's damned if you do -- damned if you don't.

A lot of people comment and message the site saying that it takes a long time for a story to get posted. The only way to solve that issue is by posting more stories. It's a no-win situation.

Personally, I think the threshold for submitted stories should be higher. More quality control should be used. Just my opinion.

And I think the most fair system would be to give higher billing to longer stories.

Kudos to Laurel for reposting today the stories which failed to make page one yesterday. Classy move!

I was thinking about this thread a bit over the past few days. It made me think back to when I used to read stories on this site pretty much daily, from around 2002 when I first discovered the site until about 2007 or so. It was just a radically different experience than what it has to be for newer readers now. One of the things I used to do, after I'd read all the new stories that had been posted that day, was to go through some of my favorite categories and look for some that I had missed. The way I usually did it was to go letter by letter through the alphabetical listing. I can't even imagine now how long it would take to go through all the stories in I/T just under the letter "R" for example...

I believe that's right around 1,000 stories currently.

Just because I checked it for another thread…

On January 30th of this year of 2 Zero Double 2, 191 (one hundred and ninety one) new stories, across all categories, from 175 authors (one author had six - yes, 6 - stories) posted that day.

I’m not at my computer which has the spreadsheet, so I don’t know how many categories and the count for each offhand.

Number one reason why I no longer post in LW. I'm not spending days or months writing to enjoy 2-3 days, or as it has happened a couple of times...no days in the sunshine. (partially my fault)

I was also triple pissed to discover the new hub no longer offers the top stories of the week. That brought a lot of traffic once you were below the fold. Now it's a list of the also-ran stories. Showing the (random?) 2 & 3's when you have a top list of stories running 4.5-4.8+. My first thought was they might know about running a website but do they really understand their writers and readers. Cause the readers WANT the top stories. Top writers want exposure.

Bear in mind, though, that the vast majority of readers don't bother to set up a Literotica account. They're reading anonymously, using the old interface. I often log onto the site and look at a few of the category frontpages before I log in to my account, just to see what everything currently looks like to most readers. Of course, that's on a PC or laptop. Not sure if the new interface is the default on a phone, tablet, or other device. Does anyone else know?

It's happened again...

This morning there were 33 new stories in the I/T category. On the old interface, only 25 of them appear before the list cuts off. I saw at least two really good stories among the last 8, and the majority of readers aren't even seeing those. :(
