So I'm Dating a Murderer
Closed for PrincessSexci and Fr33ks33k

Stephanie couldn't believe she was actually sitting in a speed dating place. She'd never been interested in this sort of thing. It was like..******* dating...but real. How in the fuck could you get to know someone in 5 minutes or less? Her best friend actually ran the place and unfortunately had been very worried about Stephanie's social life.

It wasn't like Stephanie was ugly or anything. No, she was gorgeous. She'd always been the most popular girl in high school and never had to beg for dates during college. She had dark brown hair and brown hair, a curvy voluptious body but she wasn't fat weighing 120 lbs and stood at 5'4. In fact, many times she'd been told she was every guy's dream girl.

It was just lately, she had been focusing more so on work than anything else. She was an aspiring book writer and sometimes she became so enraptured in her own stories and fantasies that she didn't think about real life. "Don't worry, you'll have fun. You don't actually have to go out with a guy or anything. You just need to get out." Her best friend Tanya said.

And so here she was.

"Okay, these are the rules for those of you who have never done speed dating before." Tanya started. "You have five minutes to get to know the person your are sitting with. Take their number, whatever but as soon as the five minutes is up, I want the right side to move counter clockwise to the next seat. Everyone clear? Okay, ready go!"

About two hours later, Stephanie glanced at her watch, not really paying attention to who was sitting in front of her now. She'd talked to doctors, lawyers, fat guys who still lived with their mother, Mama's boys; and the list went on.

She was tired and wanted to go home. There was only five minutes left which meant she only had to be tortured by the next poor pathetic soul. "Switch!" Tanya yelled after dinging the little bell. She looked up at the last guy of the night and her heart stopped. "Hi, I'm Stephanie Monroe." she said, holding her hand out to shake his.

Craig Newman straightened his tie and checked the time again. Not a single one of these women had what he was looking for. It wasn't the first time he'd been here, and it wouldn't be the last, but he was beginning to think that he should move on to a different circle if he was to find his latest.

He rose to his feet, 6 feet 4 inches in height, and smoothed down the front of his dress shirt, dusting errant crumbs that may or may not have been on his dark slacks. Craig smiled at the woman who extended her hand to him. She was the last of the session for the day, and he counted himself lucky. "Perfect...just perfect," he thought as he took her hand gingerly.

"Hello Stephanie, I'm Craig."

His smile continued as he took his seat, glancing at the timer blazing the remaining minutes on the wall. Her body type was just right; petite but curvaceous. Her chestnut hair was just the right length for...He realized she was talking now, and he brought his attention to the conversation. He had to play this one right; she was his sign that the pieces were falling into place again.

"So what do you do? I'm an editor myself. Nothing too popular, just a small publisher here in town."

Her eyebrow raised at his occupation. Editor, ding ding ding. Jackpot! Small or not, she'd actually been looking for someone to be her editor. Still, Tanya had told her to becareful because some guys lied about their occupations. Of course, if he'd wanted to lie he could've said he was a big editor, real well known.

"Really?" She said, it was clear that her interest was slightly piqued. "I'm an author." Stephanie paused and then sighed, "Okay, well not a real big famous author like Gina Showalter. I'm more of an aspiring author." she explained. "I'm a waitress, part time."

"4 minutes!" Tanya yelled.

"Um, so what are your interests? Likes, dislikes?" As he talked her eyes roamed over his overall look. Dark hair, light brown skin, and green eyes. That was interesting. It was actually rather appealing, not many African American's had green eyes.

As she explained her profession, Craig nodded and smiled softly. He knew he had her now. His mind raced with all the possibilities for this one...but he had to take his time. Getting too excited would lead to mistakes being made. He hadn't been caught yet, and he intended to stay a free man.

She asked him what he liked and disliked. In his head he heard "I like it when they squirm and scream, and I hate it when they pretend it doesn't hurt..."

What he actually said was "Well...movies, art shows, music, late night coffee dates...the usual things. Also, I like pretty women with brown hair and eyes to match..." He grinned and knew from the look in her eyes that she'd eaten that line up like a bit of chocolate.

"How about you? What do you like, Stephanie?"

Her answers here would dictate how to approach her outside of this dismal place. In a way he hated having to resort to this place, but it was the fastest way to find new 'projects'. His eyes focused intently on hers as she responded, his hands folded on the table before him.

Stephanie raised her eyebrows at his answer. He liked going to the coffee house? Really? She was speechless for a moment. She wasn't used to finding guys who were actually into that kind of thing and then he topped it off with saying he liked girls with brown hair and eyes to match. Stephanie wasn't the type of girl who giggled about meaningless compliments, but it just sort of...happened!

"3 minutes!" Tanya warned, looking at Stephanie and her current 'date'. There was something about him that didn't fit well with Tanya. Hadn't he been in here a few months ago? Shaking the thought from her head, she concentrated on keeping time.

Stephanie pursed her lips as she began naming off the things she enjoyed, "I like movies, not so much of an art fan, normally I like to go to open mic nights at the cafe, read off some poetry, uh typical girl stuff like shopping, talking on the phone, and of course, writing. I like to dance. I think you forgot to tell me your dislikes though. Mine is that I hate liars."

Stephanie thought it would be good to get that out into the opening, right then and there.

Craig made a list of the things she rattled off in his head, noting that art shows was not an option. Her declaration of disliking liars didn't trouble him, though he would have to be all the more careful with his words. Thankfully, his lure was his honesty.

"Oh, no worries there. I've been lied to before by people I thought I could trust. Not something I'd like to make a habit, myself. So, open mic nights, eh? I think I've been to a few of those. It'd be more fun with someone else to go with, share opinions and maybe a latte or two. Come to think of it, there's one going on tomorrow night. I know it's sudden, hell we just met...." he checked the big red numbers on the wall. "...4 and a half minutes ago. But you seem like a great girl. I'd like to get to know you better. Certainly better than 5 minutes can give us."

Craig's eyes momentarily roved over her upper body, drinking in the delectable sight she was. Given the high pressure of having just a few seconds to process his request, he hoped that she would agree.

Stephanie opened her mouth to say something, but the thirty seconds must've passed in an instant because Tanya yelled, "TIME!" Of course, the minute she finds a guy who seemingly was perfect for her, Tanya yelled time. Why did the other guys seem to be sitting with her for five fucking hours. As Tanya said her thanks to everyone for coming, Stephanie shuffled through her purse, pulling out the only thing she had to write on.

A napkin.

She pulled out her lipstick (because she didn't think she'd actually find someone remotely interesting in speed dating) and wrote out her number. "I'd like that. You seem like a nice guy. Uh, sorry about the lipstick writing. To be honest, I didn't think I'd actually meet anyone...interesting here. So I'm a bit, ill prepared."

She flashed him a small smile.

He accepted the jotted number with a small chuckle. "No, it's perfectly fine. Though I'm glad we did end up meeting."

Craig put the number into his shirt pocket as he rose from his seat. Everyone else was departing and the hostess was wandering over to talk to Stephanie. It appeared they knew each other. Shaking Stephanie's hand, he smiled once more before leaving.

"I'll give you a call tomorrow afternoon to figure out the details. Great meeting you, Stephanie."

As he slid into the driver's seat of his car, his smile took on a more predatory nature. This one, he had high hopes for. He put it in drive and headed home, to plan out his next moves...

"Sounds good." Stephanie said to his retreating form just as Tanya came up to her. "Hey, you ready?" Tanya said, after eying the guy suspiciously. Stephanie nodded and both girls walked out together. Tanya drove Stephanie home, since Stephanie had opted to just go with her instead of taking her own car.

"So you found someone I see..." Tanya said, casually.

"Mhm, its no big deal. I mean, its not like it would go anywhere. We're just gonna go out for coffee. We have similar likes and you did tell me to get out there again." Stephanie explained.

"Yeah, just...no nevermind." Tanya said, she was going to warn Stephanie about how many times he'd been in Speed Dating.

"What?"Stephanie raised her eyebrow at Tanya curiously.

"Okay don't take this the wrong way, but just be careful okay. Relationships don't seem to last with that guy. He was just in speed dating like two or three months ago."

"Tanya, it is speed dating. You don't actually expect someone to find true love in five minutes, do you?"

For the rest of his evening Craig spent his time listening to music and enjoying a glass of bourbon on the rocks. He sifted through his bag of implements, the one he only brought out when the time was right. He smiled down at the tools in the bag, remembering the last time he'd used them. He leaned back in his plush recliner, swirling the cubes of ice in his glass.

The next day he rose early and went about his daily rituals of exercise and meditation. After a quick shower, he retrieved Stephanie's number and pressed the digits into his cell phone.

"Hi Stephanie, it's Craig. I was just calling to confirm we were still on for the open mic tonight. I didn't know if you wanted to just meet there, or I could pick you up if you'd like...." he trailed off as he waited for her answer, his eyes wandering over his modest but moderately upscale living conditions. Just enough to make visitors feel comfortable, to lull them into a sense of security. Soon enough, she'd be here feeling that way...until it was far too late.

The next day hadn't been too strenuous on Stephanie. She went to work and silently complained about the customers who constantly got an enjoyment of slapping her on the ass. Stephanie worked at Denny's, so it was sometimes hard for even her to believe that perverts would actually do something like that.

When she returned home, she'd just settled down at her computer to continue working on her first novel. It was a romance, where a sheltered girl meets a man who isn't all he's cracked up to be. Eventually, nearing the end they both realize that they are madly in love and like all romances; they get married and the reformed thief no longer steals.

Fantasy at it's greatest.

Suddenly, her cellphone rang and looked at the number. She frowned in confusion because she didn't recognize the number at all and hardly ever got any spam calls.

"H-hello?" She said, slightly wary of the strange call. When she heard Craig's voice, she physically relaxed. "Oh yeah, we're still on for tonight. I can drive, just tell me what coffee house?" Just because she'd had a connection with him, didn't mean she was stupid enough to go somewhere alone with him and not bring her own car.

"Ok, it's at Jerry's Coffee House. It's supposed to start at 8 so...how about I meet you there at 7? It'll give us a chance to talk some more and get to know each other a bit better."

What Craig really wanted was to figure out her schedule, more of her likes, and just how he could get her to let down her guard. What better way than more casual chatting?

As he listened to her breathing over the phone, he imagined just how her chest would rise and fall confronted with any of the tools in his bag...

"Don't get ahead of yourself.....there will be much time for that...later..." he thought, a small grin curving his lips.

"Jerry's Coffeehouse, 8? I'll be there." Stephanie said, luckily that was a place she'd been many times before therefore, she didn't need directions. "So, I'll see you then." She said, then after saying their goodbyes; Stephanie hung up the phone. Sighing, she stretched and walked into her bedroom. Her apartment was nothing lavish or expensive. It was a small little condo in the downtown area.

The furnishing were simple as well. The love seat was white as well as the couch. She walked into her bedroom which was decorated in her favorite color's red and black and opened up the closet. Searching for something to wear, Stephanie tried to decide how she wanted to come across tonight.

Sexy but not skanky. Smart but not too smart enough not to look sexy. Thus her choice was a pair of jeans and a red button up blouse. She put on a red baret to match, grabbed her book of poetry and left after putting on cherry flavored lipgloss. Finally, around 6:45 Stephanie left and arrived at the coffeehouse at 7:05. She walked inside and found a table for both her and Craig.

Craig had been at Jerry's since 6:30. He'd ordered a mocha for himself and sat down at a table in the corner. He was positioned so that he could watch the door without looking conspicuous. He sipped his coffee and idly flipped through one of the books he'd snatched from his bookshelves. It'd ended up being rather boring actually, not something he'd recalled buying. Just a conversation piece at best.

She arrived fashionably late, which he found slightly amusing. It was typically the guy who pulled that move. She looked just as lovely as she had at the speed dating hall, though she'd put a bit more effort into this outfit. The red was a very fetching color on her.

Closing his book and grabbing his drink, he moved through the growing crowd toward the table she'd picked out. He smiled and waved as he came into her line of sight, closing the distance and sitting down opposite her.

"Hi there! You look very lovely. I like the beret."

Craig placed his book on the table next to his coffee and folded his hands on top of his book. He noticed she'd brought some reading material as well, though the cover was more like a notebook than anything else.

"What've you got there?"

The coffee shop was still filling with people, the din getting louder slowly. Craig leaned forward, both to show he was paying attention and to get a better look at Stephanie.

Stephanie had been idly flipping through her book of poetry searching for a good poem to read. She'd been here a few times before and always enjoyed reading her own written works. There were times when she read poems by famous authors but it was much more fulfilling reading her own poems.

Someone walking toward Stephanie's table caught her attention and she glanced up and closed her book, smiling at Craig as he approached.

"Thank you, it's one of my favorite ensembles." She said, "You look nice as well."

When he asked her about her book, she glanced down and smiled, "Oh this?" She held up the book, "It's my very own works. I like to write poetry in my spare time and normally keep it in here. I was thinking about going up onstage later tonight and reading one of them."

She too, glanced at the book in his hands. "And what do you have?" She said, nodding her head towards the book he clutched.

He smiled at her compliment, glad that his casual dress was appealing to her. Simple slacks and a dress shirt had seemed the way to go, and he was right. As her eyes drifted to his book, he laughed softly.

"This? It's just a bit of fiction. I picked it up and got through the first chapter, but I haven't been able to keep reading it."

He took a sip from his mocha before continuing, "So, you're not just an author? And you've read here before? It's a wonder we've never met before. Are there any pieces you're particularly fond of? I'd love to hear one..."

Craig's eyes were always focused on Stephanie's. It was one of the ways he held his concentration, avoiding over-eager action. He smiled again and shifted his chair around beside her, giving him a better vantage of her poetry notebook and also affording him a closer proximity to her. He could smell cherries; the last one had smelled like cherries....this was getting better and better.

With him in such close proximity, it made Stephanie blush. 'Yeah, I've read here before. I didn't realize you came here frequently. It is odd that we've never met though."

He commented about wanting to hear one.

"I guess I like them all. There's this one I wrote during my first year of college. " She flipped through the book and found one she'd written when she was 18 during her first year of college. "Just so you know, I wrote this when I was 18. Sorry if it is terribly crappy."

Stephanie cleared her throat and began reading.

Pure as rain
Soft to the touch
Sweet as sin
Gives her a rush

Velvet and smooth
she aches with desire
when he touches her
it's like she's on fire

Please her
tease her
intoxicate her always
Make her
break her
she'll be yours forever.

By the time Stephanie had finished reading, she couldn't look Craig in the eye. Pursing her lips, she thought she'd better explain. "I was taking a writing class at the time and our professor wanted us to be bold and write something different. So he told us to write an erotic poem. Granted, his ethics weren't so great and he'd gotten fired after one of the students complained about him hitting on her.."

Craig noted the flush of her cheeks as he moved closer to her. Another good sign, one that meant she didn't mind being near him, but was also a bit timid about it. He smiled as she began her poem. By the end of it, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest. It was as though she'd been witness to any one of his previous 'projects' It sounded like a simple, perfect narration.

He snapped back from his reverie as she spoke again, explaining the origin of the poem and the lewd professor who'd encouraged it.

"Well, despite his moral ambiguity, what you've written is very lovely. It's intimate and intense without being overly descriptive. Do you have any others like it? Maybe you could read one of those tonight?"

Her choice of shared material had emboldened him to push her boundaries. If she could be persuaded to do such a thing, the other possibilities were limitless. Even if she refused, he knew now that she had such thoughts hidden in her psyche. His eyes glinted in the subdued light of the coffee shop.

Stephanie glanced up at him, slightly shocked that he wasn't put off by the poem. In answer to his question, she shook her head no."No, I mean..I have written more like this one but... um, I don't think I could actually go up there and read it."

She closed her book, "I'm actually shocked that I read that one to you. No one who has ever known me even knows I've written something like that." She figured it was because despite the fact that she hardly knew Craig, she felt comfortable around him. He wasn't over bearing and didn't seem like one of those macho men.

Stephanie waved down a waitress and ordered a caramel machioto. Once the waitress scurried off to get her drink, she turned her attention back to Craig. "I'll find something special to read for you though." Her tone had switched to a lightly flirty tone.

"Oh, no trouble there. Eroticism can certainly be a very private matter."

As the waitress trotted over and took Stephanie's order, he asked politely for a refill of his own cup. When she departed, he turned his attention back to Stephanie. His brows quirked a bit at her next comment.

"A special one? Just for me? I'm in luck! I've never had anyone choose poetry for me specifically..."

Craig placed his hand lightly on top of hers. A small gesture, but one that he knew would more than likely be accepted. The more close contact he could create, the more their 'connection' would grow.

"I can't wait to hear it."

Just as he spoke, the lights dimmed. It was time to start. The host tapped on the mic and cleared his throat as he welcomed everyone and asked for any volunteers. Several people made moves for the mic, but one person finally stepped all the way up on stage. Craig listened to their reading, but kept glancing over at Stephanie to gauge her reactions, and also because she was quite pretty, even in the lowered light of the coffee shop.

As the open mic reading finally began. Stephanie listened to some of the readers while fidgeting nervously. Some of the readers had written some of their own poems and some read poems previously written by great poets such as Edgar Allen Poe.

During some of the reading, the waitress returned with Craig's refill and her machioto. She took a few sips before she got up the courage to up there and read. She always seemed to get nervous when going onstage. It had probably been because it was her own stuff and she wasn't quite certain about the reception.

Not to mention, she was on a date.

"Okay, I'm gonna go up now." She flashed Craig one more smile before grabbing her book and getting onstage. Everyone looked at her and waited while she flipped through her book again.

Once she found the one she thought would fit, she stepped slightly closer to the mic. "Hi everyone, I'm Stephanie and I'll be reading a poem. It's called Eyes to the Soul."

Eyes to the soul
No one can control
Finding your love
through eyes to the soul

Simple and sweet
he knows you
and you know him
through eyes to the soul

Lovers lost
lovers found
by just looking
at the eyes to the soul

After she was finished, she stepped down and took a seat back next to Craig. "What did you think?" She asked, as she turned to look at him.

As she read, Craig kept his eyes on her. They drifted from the curve of her hips in her snug jeans, to the swell of her chest in her blouse, directly to her own eyes. He gazed at them intently as she started reading.

Throughout her reading about 'eyes to the soul', he kept imagining her eyes...and what they'd be saying without words as she looked up at him....

He shook his head to clear out those thoughts. That time would come later. For now, he had to focus on her...other aspects.

As she returned to her seat, Craig smiled. She asked him what he thought. If only she knew what he was really thinking....

"It was another lovely piece. Intimate, but in a different way. When did you write that one?"

"I wrote it a year ago, before I broke up with my last boyfriend." Stephanie explained as she took a sip of her machioto, smiling at the sweet yet dark taste of it.

More people got up on the open mic, with less original poetry. Though now it seemed they were slightly more nervous after hearing Stephanie's writing.

"So out of curiosity, what made you go to a speed dating hall?" Stephanie asked, "I hope I'm not being too bold, but I mean...it seems like you would have no problems catching the attention of a woman."

Tanya had told her to be careful with him so she figured the best way to do so was to get to know him. That's what dates were for, right?

The sounds of the open mic continued around them, but Craig had once more leaned in close to Stephanie to be heard. She was questioning his reasons for speed dating. He chuckled softly and responded with mirth.

"Well, you'd think so but to tell the truth, I'm kind of awkward around women. Somehow the pressure of having only a few minutes to try and spark a connection makes it easier for me to put myself out there. Of course, this also means that I strike out a lot. The bar scene's not really my style. How about you? Someone with your talent and looks should be beating the men back with a stick!"

He placed his hand over hers again, keeping up the intimacy of their talk. Soon enough he'd have his hooks in her...

Stephanie nodded in agreement about putting himself out there. Though, she hadn't actually had a hard time putting herself out there. She understood after not having been on a date in at least a year. When he asked her for her reasons for being there, she gave a wry grin.

"My friend Tanya, you know the hostess? She talked me into it. I mean, I don't have problems finding dates or anything, it's just I seem to meet the same guy all the time. You know what I mean? Macho bravado type of guy who thinks he's god's gift to women. It got tiring so I stopped dating for awhile. Tanya insisted I go to the speed dating hall and I was against it. " She gave a little shrug, feeling slightly embarrassed that her story wasn't as humble as his.

Stephanie took another sip of her coffee then tilted her head, "You don't seem like the sort of guy who is awkward around women though. Then again, I've only known you for 35 minutes, if we include the speed date." She teased.
