Seems like some script kiddies have nothing better to do than scrub Lit's server and download every single story and put them up for grabs.

Yes, we're publishing here for free. I know. I've heard that in every "someone took my stuff" thread. But this is more like robbing Laurel's house, big time.

There seems to be a whole cottage industry at work. A quick web search shows more of these jokers and more archives on tap from asstr and the like.

Have you told Laurel? I'm sure she'd be able to shut that shit down.

The same problem came up with Amazon a few years back. Someone was actually selling stories from here on there. SMH.

Seems to happen still, going by the "Plagiarism" threads which pop up every few months.

Sure, I'll let Laurel know.

I agree. Thanks for passing the info on to Laurel.

It's against Literotica rules to post email addresses here, so I won't.

But I will mention that if you click on the Google Drive link there, then click on "More actions" (the vertical dot-dot-dot on the right-hand side), and then click "details", the "sharing" field tells you who the owner is. You can then mouse over their icon for their email address.

Still seems to have the Google Drive link, though?

Makes it so much easier to file a DMCA notice then.

Here's Laurel's response:

Hello!

Thanks for writing, and I hope you are well.

Wow, that sucks. We'll contact the /literotica moderator about this. I would also recommend DMCAing both Reddit and Google Drive. If they get several DMCAs, they have no choice but to remove the content. That is the reason we encourage all authors to use DMCA notices whenever they find stolen work. A single DMCA doesn't have too much power, but a swarm of DMCAs forces companies to take action or risk losing some protection under US law

Thanks again, and let me know if you see anything else that needs to be checked into.

Best wishes and happy holidays!

Laurel

I've posted my formal DMCA notice against Google Drive. Since this concerns everyone on here, a few dozen more would help to get our cause across.

To split a rhetorical hair, why is this any worse than the internet archive/wayback machine? A single ginormous (i assume) file is much less useful. Speaking of which, how does the wayback machine avoid DCMA claims?

I'm not talking about archive in the "preserve for posterity" sense but in "zip file for easy sharing." They came here and systematically plucked every story from every author. To be honest, it's more Laurel's problem than mine but I thought I raise awareness before some dude puts "his" version of Lit online.

I'm no copyright lawyer, but downloading an entire website to give the stuff away is a huge dick move.

As I understand it, Wayback Machine will take material down on request. They would also have a much stronger argument for "fair use" exemption, since their purpose is to record a history of the Internet - it could be characterised as "nonprofit educational". Their archive has been used as evidence in court cases, e.g. when a company tried to retroactively change their T&Cs after a customer complained.

They're also not competing with Literotica in the same way that this downloadable archive is. If I want to read a story, there's no reason I'd do it on Wayback rather than the Literotica original (excepting cases where the story has been deleted from here). So Wayback isn't hurting our view counts or Literotica's ad revenue. This archive, OTOH, is intended to save readers from ever visiting Literotica.

Because they don't claim anything as their's and create mock setups of real websites out of posterity for them.

apparently google does (did) too.

Except the Reddit file is one yuuuge file. So while you may have most of the data, it really isn't useful. You would first need to extract the data, which also would take up a lot of drive space. Then, reading from the description of the download on reddit, you would have a 82,000+ folders, one of which is "Bramblethorn" with a bunch files titled "A Stringed Instrument...", but no indication what category those files are from, what rating, what the brief description is. Ain't no one gonna wanna wade through all that. It's got the stories but not the data to make the stories readable. That contrasts with Wayback rather sharply. Shrug.

Have you confirmed all that?

It would be trivial to append the category and score to the title, for instance: "Lesbian Sex - 4.57 - A Stringed Instrument". I have no idea whether they've actually done that, I don't see anything in the description that says they did, but I also don't see anything that says they didn't.

Even if it's all limited as you suggest... somebody can use Literotica navigation to find page 1 of one of my stories, and then go to the archive to read through everything I've posted without ever coming back to the site. They can read over and over again, without me ever getting another view or any other feedback on my story.
