So... Houston?

I just got an invitation to go do a conference job in Houston, Tx next month. I'd work Monday and Friday and have three nothing-days in the middle.

I'm pondering going, but it's half way across the planet which means a murdering jetlag and an ass-numblingly boring flight. The pay for the job is meh, and I book my own flight and hotel. Looks like it'd break even. So it's pretty much a paid vacation.

It all comes down to whether I can do somehing worthwile in the mid-week.

What, if anything, is "ohmigod, you totally must see this"-awesome there?

Difficulty: Nothing football related.

Working a conference for an out of towner is probably pretty hard. Don't let the local gals push you around!

Never miss a chance to visit Houston.

Just be-fuckin-cause or for a reason?

It's a cultural and business center with many things to see and do. You may not have time for that, but there are a lot if good restaurants and interesting people. If you tell people this is your first trip, they'll have more suggestions than you can handle and probably volunteer to show you around.

April probably isn't a bad time to go. It's the seventh circle of hell in summer.

It's been many many years, but I remember whatever that funky/hipster/punk/tattoo/gay(?) neighborhood is called being pretty cool.

Um... Johnson Space Center, maybe...?

You're probably thinking of a stretch of Westheimer Road. I took my daughter shopping for her first corset on Westheimer.

I'm no expert on Houston, but from what I have seen, the museum district is the nicest part of the city. Of course, most of the rest of it is asphalt.

It's not that time of year, so you're safe in that respect.

If you can find a way to get to Galveston, it might be worth a day trip. It's more historic than the average Texas city, and you can see the Gulf of Mexico, for what that's worth.

There are a number of Lit folk down that way. Most of 'em don't post much anymore, though. I generally stay with friends or family when I go down there.

Thanks fellas.

Snooze time. I'll check back later. I have about a week to make up my mind anyway.

I only remember that the neighborhood had a name, and that my girlfriend's conservative parents disapproved of it. Artists, musicians, sex shops, dive bars.

she should have asked them to go corset shopping with her.

Houston did not reveal any charm to me when I went for a few days. Take a road trip to Austin.

I've lived in H-town all my life and honestly can't wait to get the fuck out. Traffic blows sack of Yak, there is NO scenery at all, and there really aren't any attractions excluding Space center.

I'm jaded. I like scenery and little traffic. Many reasons to live here cool Litizens notwithstanding. No state income tax. Close proximity to the coast. Great food. Awesome strip joints. Did I mention great food/restaurants? A virtual melting pot of nationalities who amazingly enough all seem to get along. Lesbian mayor. (yeah ya know my thoughts on that one). Cheap housing. Cheap rent. Friendly people. Friendly people that will have your back if you're cool. Close proximity to Austin, TX which is the Liberal Mecca of Texas. And actually, although I hate to admit it, a really fun city. Great wineries. (yeah, believe it or not)
