So how do you learn?

Me I'm one of those people who can learn from theory but I prefer hands on to actually see how something works. (Or at least have it described in relation to something else I know.)

So how do you learn best?

We had to take a learning assessment for a class. I'm a visual learner because I prefer to read things, I make notecards, and I learn best by repetition. Now I just hope it is enough for my microbiology final Monday.

It depends on what you're learning.

The times tables or dates in history...reading and repetition...mnemonic cues help as well.

Driving nails or laying brick...hands on all the way...we learn by doing. :D

By doing. Used to be, by doing once. Now I need to repeat a procedure a couple times...

I learn best by doing, but when I can't do, I have a scriptographic memory so I generally learn best by watching and writing it down.

Pretty much by the book. I see, I know. When I'm learning by doing it always takes at least three times to get it right.

Doing or watching someone else do. Reading about whatever. It used to be I only had to see something once. Now once is good if I do myself close to the time I saw. If it is too long after seeing then I need to see it again before I can do.

If I'm learning how to do something, like removing the mower deck on my new tractor, I read the manual first, then sit down and do it step-by-step with the manual open right next to me.

If it's something more intellectual, like studying for an exam, I take notes while I'm reading the textbook, and review my notes the next day. Reading something, then writing it down, then reading it again, seems to be the best way to transfer things from short term to long term memory.

If I need to memorize lists, like a foreign language vocabulary, I make flash cards.

It depends. If it's a subject I am researching or studying for informational purposes, I learn by sampling a large amount of data and looking at it from multiple views.

If I'm learning to do something physically, such as learning to drive or learning to throw a Frisbee, I do it through practice and repetition.

If I'm learning life lessons, I learn from mistakes.

Sink or swim is how I learn just about everything.

Learning is the easiest activity there is. At 3 years I peed on an electric fence; do you know that it was what we call ONE TRIAL LEARNING. I didnt require remedial lessons or seminars with Zig Ziglar or college coursework or a 12 Step Program. I never did it again.

What I find is lotsa shit gets in the way of such learning.

I know, too, that some are born naturals with gifts others cannot duplicate.

So when I'm up against acquiring new competencies I simply put it to the back of my mind and wait for the signal that things are in order for me to proceed.

There are lots of studies about how doing is better than writing, how writing is better than hearing. With kids, I try and guide them toward the things that will help them remember. I have to admit, with me, some things I never learn :rose:
