I love James Fenimore Cooper. Mark Twain said Cooper sucked. And if you examine Cooper's prose, he did. You'll find all the flaws you want. Yet his books are masterworks.

I collect 19th Century newspaper articles. In the articles I collect the prose is to die for, and full of errors from beginning to end. But the writers captured the experience.

Kenneth Roberts is another writer like Cooper. I love his books. Read OLIVER WISWELL if you can. It does not flatter the Patriots. And his autobiography, WHY I WRITE is a revelation about the craft.

Cooper wrote the Leatherstocking Tales alright. Irving wrote, among others, The legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle

Irving wrote THE EARLY EXPERIENCES OF RALPH RINGWOOD which were printed serially in THE KNICKERBOCKER MAGAZINE, and Cooper wrote THE LEATHERSTOCKING TALES.

"Ringwood" was Florida Governor William P. Duval.

I knew Irving wrote a collection similar to Cooper's.

I don't think the percentage of smut peddlers is that high. A big majority, okay, but not that much.

Besides that, if I were to name anybody as King of the Smut Peddlers, it would be myself.
