I would assume he means the TV show House. On this week's episode, a 21 y.o. named Harvey (John Cho, the MILF kid from American Pie and Harold from Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle) came in for grinding teeth, and promptly had a stroke. After a few suspicious scenes (Harvey reacting in a less-than-pained way to a needle test, his "friend" Annette answering most of the questions he's asked, Dr. Chase watching her through the window and asking Dr. Foreman who she is) the three young doctors go to Harvey's room and walk in on Annette choking him. Foreman manhandles her off of him, but Chase reluctantly tells him to let her go: she wasn't trying to kill Harvey, she's a dominatrix.

They suspect Harvey's penchant for being choked caused an aneurysm in the carotid artery and that's what's causing the strokes, but it turns out to be the result of an infection in his jaw stemming from an old, unexplained injury.

At the end of the episode, there was a scene with House and Annette where House says they can be kinky all they want--locking Harvey in a cage should be okay medically--but that the strangulations have to stop or Harvey will die. House makes a wisecrack in there about how he's something of a freak because he doesn't get off on pain, and Annette has a nice (if didactic) line on how it's not about pain: it's about being open and completely vulnerable to another person, and that if you can learn to be that deeply trusting, it changes you. It was really a very touching, succint observation.

The only thing that really annoyed me about the couple's representation was Harvey's whiny behavior and dependence on Annette. I'm tempted to give them the benefit of the doubt considering he was a mood-swinging stroke victim and all, but I don't know how many people will fail to make the connection and just assume it's typical submissive behavior (okay, the strangulation bugged a little too, but it's TV, I'd be surprised if they didn't sensationalize BDSM).

To be fair, it's hard to make an impact when they spend half the show barred from the hospital/in a coma, but I admit I was way more entertained by the revelations about formerly seminary-attending prettyboy Dr. Chase's kinky past than I was about the couple. It turns out Chase had had a girlfriend some time back who liked to get burned, and he recognized Annette from some parties he'd gone to. I'm really curious to know whether it's ever going to be mentioned again, or if it's just a one-off; the writers never firmly came down on one side or the other of what he may be into (and I've gotten into some spirited debates over the past few days on exactly what his interests and experience might entail).

Every time he started talking and got cut off, it was "I'm not into" or "I never" or "I observed," which, while it doesn't necessarily preclude anything, seemed like he was trying to distance himself from it when he was in front of the others. Of course, his first response to House's comment ("Well, I wouldn't have tortured you if I knew you liked it.") was to roll his eyes like this was just what he'd expected if anyone found out--he knew he'd be mocked for it--and he seemed much more comfortable when he was alone talking to Harvey. He chided him for, you know, doing hardcore breath play in a freaking hospital, but it was very casual and other than that he wasn't critical in the slightest. It would be interesting if they seriously folded it in as an actual character thing and not just a plot point for the one episode.

Ah, that would explain it. I don't watch TV so.... uh... yeah.

I thought it was actually a fairly even-handed treatment of the topic, considering that it's mass-market television in a country that often seems to be swinging way toward the religious right.

Hmm... last week's article mentioned here, House, and the couple or three episodes of CSI (Vegas) that featured the Dominatrix and her attraction to Grissom (and vice versa?). BDSM does seem to be getting a little less negative "press" than previously. I repeat what I asked in a previous post: Are we becoming mainstream?

Then you watch Desperate Housewives and see that Rex is treated like a freak by his wife because he likes pain.

I don't hold her up as perfect, either. She's kind of sicko, herself. She spanked another woman's son.

I don't know...there's several on that show that I'd like to poke once or twice.

And I really like Teri Hatcher. I've always had the hots for her.

Good stuff, good stuff...
I've never seen the show House. Sorry, I've never even heard of it. But, kinkiness has kind of made a comeback in TV. I think they also like getting things past the stupid sensors.
