Snowpocalpyse 2010

Where's that, YC?

My in-laws are on a cruise, they flew out Friday morning. They were in Aruba today. *sighs*

California, and check this out, nice weather, not too hot not too cold, but if you still want the snow, just head up the mountains. :D

Milk eggs and bread, apparently are the things people run on.

It's good to know that in case of zombie attack there will be french toast.

and don't forget gasoline. pumps all over the metro area have been running dry. i'm still waiting for someone to tell me, what exactly do you do with the gasoline?

oh, Daddy went to the grocery store last night, a newish one down the street, and he said they were cleaned out of just about everything. no eggs, no dry cereal, no fresh meats or produce period. they had just got in a shipment of milk though, so he got a quart. that and frozen food will have to suffice for us if this snow amounts to anything.

Ok

Who broke the Earth, I mean seriously, 'fess up, this is crazy. Our neighborhood dug out, and we made it out yesterday and today. The craziness is abating somewhat except today there is no cilantro in my local store-none, not fresh, not frozen cubes, not those odd tubes. None not a spring, and we are also almost out of mint and basil-so all of us hipster moms are doing Thai to help us weather the blizzard? I am not sure what another 20 inches are going to do to us mentally, my chickens are not happy, my kids are even getting bored with the snow. If this is a drill for the zombie apocalypse we might have failed, at this point I will welcome the zombies of they have shovels or come on a plow. My seven year old asked if this forever winter would ever end, I actually told him this is what happens when you wish for snow and pout about it too much.

Well, I don't know what happened, but we didn't get the snow we were told to prepare for. Last I heard, we were going to get a MAJOR SNOW STORM starting Sunday night and then get colder and dump the rest on us during the day on Monday.

It did get colder. Sunday, it was snowing, but because the temps bordered around 32 degrees (Fahrenheit), none of the snow we got stuck on the roads. It did snow on Sunday night, but nothing on Monday. NOTHING!

Here it is Tuesday and although it has gotten quite a bit colder...about 10 to 15 degrees out today, but the sun is shining and it seems warmer than it is. Still, I'm wondering where that MAJOR SNOW STORM we were suppose to get went. I guess it missed us? Poor weathermen...and here they were counting on that snow, too.

Well, that's one job that is pretty damn easy. If you're right, you're right, and everybody is prepared for the nasty weather. But, if you're wrong, all you have to do is smile at the camera and say something like "it went (enter direction here) of us" or "we lucked out...it passed us by" or one of the most recent favorites we hear in this digital age..."of all of the different weather patterns that were targeting our area, none of them materialized." Be sure to laugh when saying any of the above and you'll make a lot of money and be a local TV personality, even when you're wrong.

I'm not sorry they were wrong...and I feel for those of you who got all of the snow you did. But, the one we were supposed to get must have gone east of us. Say, I could have been a weatherman!

Well, it seems everybody was heeding the warnings to fill up their tank before the big snow. It's a good safety thing, in case you get stranded and have to stay in your car. You can keep the motor running and stay warm. Also, there's less of a chance your fuel line can freeze, with a full tank.

Also, the added weight of a full tank helps with traction when driving. But, from the amount of snow you all are getting, is anybody in their right mind even out on the roads? I guess those full gas tanks will still be there, when the snow melts.

Can you imagine people who have to drive in all kinds of weather? Police, firemen, ambulances, doctors...and even the mailman. "Neither rain, nor snow, nor dead of night...yadda yadda yadda"

One of my favorite jobs during college was working for the local streets and sanitation department in the town where I grew up in Maine. One winter I got to ride wingman on one of the monster snowplows for an 18 hour shift while the area got 36 inches of snow. It was scary to be responsible for lifting the wing just in time as we approached cars parked by the side of the road but there was a real sense of being at the heart of all that was important during those snow storms.

actually our mailman hasn't come since the snow first touched ground. i went to the mailbox today (it's down the street) as i hadn't gone since friday, and there was nada. there wasn't even a path or tracks to the mailbox. so clearly, our elderly asian mailman is on strike until the roads are clear....which may not be for a long, looooong time judging by the ice still all over the road with more to come tonight and tomorrow.

thanks for explaining the gas thing to me. i first thought maybe people were using it for their generators, but most people were just filling up their tanks so i was confused. but being able to keep the car running and warm in case of an emergency makes sense.

DVS, you would be surprised how many people have been on the roads. if people can get out at all, they're getting out. it's understandable in some cases...not everyone has the luxury of a sympathetic job where 3/4/5 days off won't result in a possible termination. also a lot of folks are suffering plain old cabin fever. the local news interviewed a guy at a bar, which was one of the few open establishments in the midst of the storm this weekend. the reporter was like, "sir, what brings you out to a bar in these dangerous conditions?" and the guy said, "i just couldn't spend another minute in the house with my family." haha! :D sad but true. 24/7 day after day after day with the wife and kids will drive most folks out of their freakin' minds.

Actually, I looked at the USPS website, and they admit that "local operations" have ceased. Doesn't help that the roof of my local PO (the last stop before my door) was threatening to fall in. Last I heard it hadn't...but the fire and police departments were out there keeping an eye on it.

Keroin, your tongue-biting is noted and appreciated! ;)

Part 2 has started here...

We got... rain. Shitloads of rain. Last week we got around 9" of snow, followed by rain, and freezing temps that turned it all into ice. Whee, instant shut-down.

Looks like we'll be getting some more snow shortly...

Down south

All this talk of things shutting down makes me glad I'm in Mississippi. We have a threat of snow, and the whole state shuts down. Everyone hang in there and I hope it isn't too terrible.

It's supposed to snow here (Alabama) on Friday. I don't know if it'll snow in Mississippi, too. But if it does, we're both in for the same kind of crap, LOL.

All you snowbunnys be careful ok. Don't do anything I wouldn't do twice.

Annnnnnd we're fucked for another day or two.

Maryland and DC have stopped snowplow operations due to the whiteout conditions.

Here in Chicago we had about 24 hours of light snow that left, altogether, around 8 inches or so yesterday and into this morning.

I would like to personally thank all of my DC/Maryland area friends for so graciously accepting the bulk of the snow that we usually get in the winter.

:rose:

you're welcome.

the wind is so bad now we can't see past our driveway.

i"m so making some sort of t-shirt and selling it to all my mom friends...."I survived ______"

I told the kids that they have to go to school until August now...

oh totally. t. is living the life right now, only one (half day) of school in the past week, and PG county has already announced schools will be closed through monday at least. all 5 of the official snow days were used up with the last storm. he's going to be soooo depressed when he realizes he'll be in school half the summer, lol.

We were nearly in whiteout this morning. Two of our cats were sitting by the patio door watching in amazement as huge flakes slammed into the deck. The sky was white and I could barely see the trees whipping violently in the backyard.

So, brave me, I decide that it is time to get more kerosene. I use kero to heat the garage/office, and I figure I can use it to heat the living if the power goes out. Anyway, the kids' schools were close to where I was going, so I figured I'd save time and just pick them up.

Yeah, the snow totally stopped by the time I got the last kid out of school. Utterly stopped, no precipitation at all. Ya gotta love that.

What Yankee said ~ Hi sweetie. In SE Wisconsin I got 11.5 inches of the white stuff and very high winds.

Thank you so much you DC/Maryland/Virginia folk. :D

Yup, I remember having to stay past the end of the school year when I was in high school. Definitely whiteout conditions for a while here; DC stopped plowing because their plow drivers couldn't see.

Daddy just ate the last slice of pizza (which we braved the roads to go out and get yesterday, and which he claimed he did not want, would just be for me, etc.). i'm kinda ticked. this storm is starting to effect the subbie in me.

(don't tell him tho:eek:)

Mmmmmm PIZZA. I think it's perfectly okay to get ticked about that. Pizza is goooood.

Wife went to work yesterday, and brought Chinese food home because I begged. Not because I desperately need it, but because I can't get it delivered and therefore I want it!

I can't leave the house at all. I tried. Can't drive on my street, and there are no sidewalks on the main road - they have 5 feet of snow piled up.
