Between 14 and 30 inches of snow have fallen from New York City, north Jersey and the Poconos northwestward to Syracuse.
Up to 3 feet of snow have fallen in the hills southwest of Albany.
The snow has been heavy and wet which has brought down numerous trees and power lines leading to widespread power outages.
Meanwhile further north a surge of warm and moist air rushed in off the Atlantic Ocean bringing heavy rains to New England and to Down East Maine.
As much has 5 inches of rain fell on Thursday creating localized flooding throughout eastern New England.
The powerful storm also has been accompanied by some incredible wind gusts. Winds gusted to between 60 and 70 miles per hour near the coast from Boston to Portland Maine last night with gusts to 90 mph just offshore.
The high winds have lead to countless reports of downed trees and power lines across New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. The winds have diminished but will remain blustery into tonight.
As the snow rotates westward and southward today it will drop 3 to as much as 10 inches of snow from between Erie Pennsylvania and Cleveland Ohio southeastward to the mountains of southwest Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
While the snow is becoming lighter across New York City and Philadelphia it will continue to come down in bursts into tonight with another couple of inches likely to fall by Saturday morning.
Winds have also been strong in the Mid-Atlantic during the morning, gusting to between 50 and 62 mph in the I-81 corridor from Harrisburg to Roanoke. These winds will gradually diminish into tonight.
The storm will meander its way into southern New England this weekend eventually drifting back offshore and dissipating by Sunday.
