Between 14 and 30 inches of snow have fallen from New York City, north Jersey and the Poconos northwestward to Syracuse.

Up to 3 feet of snow have fallen in the hills southwest of Albany.

The snow has been heavy and wet which has brought down numerous trees and power lines leading to widespread power outages.

Meanwhile further north a surge of warm and moist air rushed in off the Atlantic Ocean bringing heavy rains to New England and to Down East Maine.

As much has 5 inches of rain fell on Thursday creating localized flooding throughout eastern New England.

The powerful storm also has been accompanied by some incredible wind gusts. Winds gusted to between 60 and 70 miles per hour near the coast from Boston to Portland Maine last night with gusts to 90 mph just offshore.

The high winds have lead to countless reports of downed trees and power lines across New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. The winds have diminished but will remain blustery into tonight.

As the snow rotates westward and southward today it will drop 3 to as much as 10 inches of snow from between Erie Pennsylvania and Cleveland Ohio southeastward to the mountains of southwest Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

While the snow is becoming lighter across New York City and Philadelphia it will continue to come down in bursts into tonight with another couple of inches likely to fall by Saturday morning.

Winds have also been strong in the Mid-Atlantic during the morning, gusting to between 50 and 62 mph in the I-81 corridor from Harrisburg to Roanoke. These winds will gradually diminish into tonight.

The storm will meander its way into southern New England this weekend eventually drifting back offshore and dissipating by Sunday.

We've got about 6 or 7 inches around these parts... and it's still coming down. About 3 to 4 more inches is predicted by tomorrow.

I'll be there in a couple of weeks. Was kind of hoping Central Park would be all melted... maybe not.

New Hampshire

The National Weather service reported gusts as high as 68 mph in Concord and Portsmouth while Greenland experienced 63 mph gusts. A gust at more than 120 mph was reported on the top of Mt. Washington.

The strange weather formations, that protects Massachusetts, sometimes does a reversal.
It creates a round- about (merry-go-round), that circles in the same spot,
sometimes, for a month or longer. The extreme occurences,
only happen once in 20 years.

Airlines canceled 1,689 flights as of midday New York time because of the snow and high winds, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News.

All major airports in the Northeast remained open, although arrival delays were reported at John F. Kennedy International in New York, Philadelphia International and Washington Dulles International, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s Web site.

At Newark Liberty International, a hub for Continental Airlines Inc., 65 percent of today’s 591 scheduled commercial and freight flights were canceled, according to FlightStats.com, which tracks airline and airport performance. More than 1,500 flights were grounded across the Northeast yesterday, most of them in New York, Boston and Philadelphia.

Supposed to continue through tomorrow, but it's already started breaking up from the big-assed mass of white and green that was on the radar yesterday. We're not exactly starving for snow here right now! :D

Snow country

Winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 pm est saturday,

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 pm est Saturday for the

Berkshires and the Southern Greens of Vermont as well as eastern ulster county.

Total snowfall accumulations of 6 to 20 inches are expected by saturday e

evening across eastern ulster county as well as the southern green

mountains and the berkshires. The heaviest accumulations will be above 1500

feet in bennington, western windham and berkshires counties.

The snow will be more showery in nature in that intensity will vary from flurries

to falling very heavily at times, briefly up to an inch per hour. As temperatures

drop below freezing tonight, snow will stick to all surfaces, even in valley locations.

The snow will become less wet with time, but any additional accumulations in

areas that have over a foot already on the ground and trees, could

experience additional power outages. The weight of the snow on roofs and

buildings may result in the collapse of some structures.

Travel will remain treacherous in this area. If possible, postpone or modify

your travel plans through Saturday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions,

A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice are

expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel

very hazardous or impossible.

Make it stop

I was wondering why we dodged the bullet, this time around.
