Erin Fedewa, a marine biologist with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, told AFP the shocking numbers seen today are the result of heatwaves in 2018 and 2019.

The "cold water habitat that they need was virtually absent, which suggests that temperature is really the key culprit in this population decline," she said.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Alaska is the fastest warming state in the country, and is losing billions of tons of ice each year — critical for crabs that need cold water to survive.

the warmer waters led to the population coming under extreme stress from several fronts: disease, starvation, and a lack of cold waters where they can escape their main predators.

Shrugs...won't be the last fishery wiped out.

If the industry listened 30 years ago when we raised concerns, they could have been more prepared for this inevitable outcome. No....we couldn't have stopped it...maybe delayed it...but not stop it. But there could have been a checkoff system implemented that had been racking up funds to compensate the fishermen. Now...it will be the Federal Govt supporting a dead industry that doesn't realize it is dead. Reactive instead of proactive

Go to the life cycle diagram. They don't reach sexual maturity until age 8. Now this is the Eastern species....but if i remember correctly there isn't much difference between the Eastern and Alaskan species (i could be wrong here). That means it is a flip of a coin as to if this species is wiped out. The ocean has temp cycles. It is possible this is part of a normal occurrence...something that benefits the species long term. But if it is due to climate change...the species is extinct. Now...maybe the crabs are in deeper water and not where they were? Or further north? This is why funding is critical to understanding how climate change affects commercial industries

Snow crab sucks anyway. Too much work for too little meat. Thats also what she said. Figured I'd get that in before anyone else.
