"It has become commonplace to call Britain a “surveillance society,” a place where security cameras lurk at every corner, giant databases keep track of intimate personal details and the government has extraordinary powers to intrude into citizens’ lives."

Orewell's nightmare came true and it is called Britain.

How do they cope?

I'm torn about things over there. On one hand, using it to control irratic driving and crime is obviously good...but where is the line drawn?

In montreal they have camera's set up now in high risk areas. Get a nice ticket in the mail if you speed there. There are actually signs posted three times before the cameras, warning you about them.

Naturally people slow down just in time to be at the legal limit for the cameras but the point is, the gov covered all their bases. One of the smartest things I think they've done in awhile...besides making turning right on red lights legal in every city but montreal :D

So long as camera's aren't hidden and there are warnings announcing their presence...IDK. Idea has merit.

The complaint isn't about CCTV, it's about powers that the UK government granted as a result of 9/11.

Powers intended to combat terrorism are now being routinely used by local authorities to investigate minor infractions.

If I go about my normal day I expect to appear on CCTV a hundred or more times. Some cameras are for road users to enforce speed limits and to catch those jumping red lights. Some are to catch anti-social and criminal behaviour. Those are most watched and in use in the evenings and after dark but they can identify shoplifters before and after they enter a store.

In stores, even Mom and Pop corner shops, there will be CCTV. Most will have an overt system with visible cameras and monitors AND a covert system to catch those who think they aren't visible on the overt system.

Most CCTV protects the law-abiding public and their property.

But the case that started this thread is about potential abuse of powers granted for a wholly different purpose and I'm afraid that our current government has a poor record on protecting civil liberties.

Yes the eager Councilman who sees a miscreant under every door step who knows he's in the right, and uses the power to persecute his neighbors.

Snoopy, Idealogs who invade our privacy for no good reason.
Spend a thousand pounds to investigate a forty cent crime.

It's not merely 'poor'. It's non-existent, and I suspect the real reason is that our
"Home Secretary" (a blister of the first water), did not think before taking unto herself a lot of power by 'Statuary Instrument'. That, and letting the local Councils do what they want by way of snooping !
