Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Monday advocated for Israel to occupy the Gaza Strip and promote “voluntary migration” to reduce its Palestinian population by half within two years. Speaking at a Jerusalem conference organized by the Yesha Council, which represents Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Smotrich said Israel “can and must occupy the Gaza Strip” following the ongoing conflict with Hamas.

“We shouldn’t shy away from this term [occupation],” Smotrich told attendees. He suggested that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) take responsibility for Gaza’s civilian administration to eliminate Hamas’ governance. Dismissing concerns about the financial burden, he argued that even if it costs billions of dollars, “if that’s what it takes to ensure Israel’s security, so be it.”

Smotrich is the racist asswipe who wants to absorb the West Bank into Israel and has tirelessly promoted illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Smotrich is arguably one of the most racist Israelis alive today, which is truly saying something. He's one of those "the only good Arab is a dead Arab" types.

There is a limit to the number of Brownshirts available, and it got to the point where the West Bank needed Israeli troops to quell the Arab population in the West Bank.

There was an election that Netanyahu wanted to win, but he didn't have enough votes to be named prime minister. So Smotrich made a bargain with Netanyahu. Send me two battalions of IDF troops to support my Brownshirt "settlers" and my racist party will support your candidacy. Netanyahu of course said yes and won the election via coalition.

But now Netanyahu had a problem, he didn't have enough troops to keep his end of the deal.

He tried ending draft deferments for Orthodox Jews to bolster Army ranks, but public pushback was too intense. So he opted to remove two battalions of IDF troops guarding the Israeli-Gaza border, and replaced them with 13 automated machine gun towers with interlocking fields of fire.

State of the art technology, run by operators 30 kilometers away. Hey, the "Iron Dome" was a spectacular success against missiles, they figured the "Iron Wall" would keep out the pacified Gazan population.

They were wrong. Spectacularly wrong. Hamas noticed immediately that troops had been replaced by these structures. Over the course of the next year they plotted how to take out these towers, invade Israel and get revenge for being essentially held under starvation conditions for well over a decade.

The Mossad evidently knew all about this but were unable to convince the government to do something about this.

Hamas executed their plan on 10/7 and took out 12 of the 13 "impregnable" towers. The 13th tower withstood assault and shredded a huge number of Hamas regular troops. Gazans poured across the border on a rampage of burning and looting and raping and killing, while troops were hours away.

Israel learned a painful lesson that day: Don't build "the world's largest outdoor concentration camp" and neglect to staff the "prison" with guards.
