(7/16/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Officers do not expect to file charges against the driver of an 18-wheeler who ran over and killed a man last night in southeast Houston.

Police say the truck driver had a green light at Lawndale and Central and was making a turn when a man walked right into his truck and fell under the tires. Police say the pedestrian was lighting a cigarette at the time and may not have been paying attention to where he was going.

The victim died at the scene.

I can add to this with a story of my own.

When I was doing clinicals while training to be an EMT, we picked up this kid who had been driving his parent's car. He was underage and had been smoking when he dropped the cigarette on the floor. While still driving the vehicle, he bent down to pick up the cigarette rather than stopping. The result was that he smashed into a parked truck.
