Well, they do. On the non-burning end on their burning sticks.

Here be rant. Icomnprehensible rant.

I went out with a few blokes and blokettes for a bite and a handful of beers. It was nice. Good eatin' good drinkin' good chattin' and good in general. Except for me having a minor cold and everyone and their mother puffing a smoke and blowing the reek in my direction. And the place was pretty crowded, so I ended up yelling my conversation avcross the table for three hours straight. And then the temperature dropped below freezing point, just as I decided to head home. But since I had a few brews in my veins, I didn't notice.

So now it feels like I have swallowed a coarse file that stuck half way down.

I blame the smokers. I know it's my fault too for not being careful when I'm all already. But it's cooler to blame other people.

Anyone got a household remedy for general throat fuckup that works. Not counting heavy opiates.

Try a mixture of honey & alcohol Liar. The alcohol will burn, but the honey will coat & sooth. It's also a natural anti-bacterial so it will protect you from getting an infection.

At least you must have very talented friends. Anybody I know who tries to smoke with a hand full of beer can't keep the fag lit.

Our old family remedy was hot lemonade (juice of one real lemon) and a shot of whiskey. (A tablespoon when I was still a shrimp.)

It always worked. I never got out of school. :(

You think smokers suck? Try SMOKING. I know I never will again! Two cigarettes and one inicident with the "Glass Hammer" convinced me.

Honey and Clove Tea. Brew tea with couple of whole cloves added (ground cloves tend to stick to the lining of your throat and are unpleasantly strong when they do.)

Sweeten Tea with LOTS of Honey -- half and half isn't too much Honey -- and drink as hot a you can stand to swallow.

A teaspoon of pure Honey is also a good way to sooth a sore throat temporarily.

Honey contains/is a natural antibiotic and Clove oil is a natural topical anesthetic.

wow, i'm really surprised no one thought to add:
gargle with salt water.

mom was a speech and hearing pathologist and thats what she would have said. atleast 4 times a day. i have no idea why it works but it does. the oddest thing is that kat's vocal coach says the same thing. so, there must be something to it.

i like the honey and whiskey approach.. *grin*

It works because most bacteria can't live in very high saline environments. The reason it doesn't get recommended is because it tastes NASTY. :p

ah WH... there are plenty of things that taste nasty, aren't there? we still do it.. *grin*

but i knew that if anyone would know the reason why the salt water worked, it would be you.
*hugs*

My dad would always make us a 'hot toddy'. I think that is rum and hot water but Im not sure.

I use the hot water with lemon and honey, kids music teacher recomments it all the time. (he is one hot teacher so Id listen to him!) lol

Old Vocalist Trick

Hot tea and Honey witha twist of lemon. Always worked and learned it from a vocalist. She struggled singing in smoky bars but that at the break always brought her back.

If you can find it where you are, Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat Tea works wonders. :)

Ingredients: a hat, whisky, sugar, lemon, boiling water...

Put as much sugar as you take in coffee/tea into a glass (or a couple of teaspoons if you don't)

Soak that with lemon juice.

Add whisky, to drown the above.

Finally, add boiling water to taste.

Place hat at foot of bed. Drink the mixture as above until you see two hats...
------------------------------------------------
Alternatively...

Take a spoonful of butter, plus an equal amount of sugar. Mix thoroughly.

Add as much vinegar as the sugar content will absorb.
------------------------------------------------

Both are excellent remedies - the latter is especially for kids under alcohol age, the former for 'adults'...

Maybe neither actually cures the condition, but both mean you don't mind it as much!

I love that, Eff, and I've plenty hats. Will do next time I'm sick with cold or flu (which will probably be this season as I could not get a flu shot  ).

That's Yanks for ya, Liar - no-one has mentioned garlic!

Garlic, garlic, garlic.

Mym mum chops 1-2 garlic clefts up in tiny pieces together with a tomatoe, puts it on a sandwich, and eats it. If bacteria doesn't like salt, they HATE garlic!

Garlic also works well to prevent you from getting a cold, mostly beacuse it makes others keep away from you, so they can't infect you.

Honey's good too, and don't forget to wear warm, woollen socks. Wool sucks up sweat and keeps your feet warm, whereas cotton just keeps your feet wet and cold.

I abhor garlic..........I would be throwing up.
I DO throw up at just the smell of it..........eeeeeeeeuuuuukkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/kotz/puke.gif

It comes nowhere near my house or my person.

That said...honey, lemon juice, rum/whisky, hot water, sugar to taste. Works every time for the throat.

Do we have another vampire in our midst, perhaps? ;)

If I'm ever to cook you anything, please remind me of that. I put loads of garlic in everything.

Thanks, everyone. I now have more remedies than I'll ever have serious colds again in my life. I rode this one out with whiskey and lemon tea. Worked pretty well.
