Smells

Cooked human.....smells like a pork shoulder and burger cooking at the same time.

I'll never forget that smell.

Where and how did you come across it?
I suspect one of your deployments.
(I'm not trolling.)

Much more pleasant smelling than exploded human.....another special smell.

Yeah, that. The smell is instantly recognizable and unmistakable even if you've never been exposed to it before.

I have no idea why.

I wonder if it's better or worse than rotting alive human, gangrene, ulcers, stomach cancer blood vomit, arse cancer diarrhea... I rather hope to never find out.

It's different than death/decomp.....it's all the other stuff mixed.

Yea, it's usually a bad sign.

Yeah, that. The smell is instantly recognizable and unmistakable even if you've never been exposed to it before.

I have no idea why.

Reaches down into that primitive "oh shit" part of the brain.

The smell of light rain, wet sidewalk, mixed with whatever trees this neighborhood has an abundance of.

At least until the dog does it’s business.

Why do some linger more than others?

The brain has a special place for smells.

;)

I read some place that olfactory associations are one of the strongest memory links we make. It isn't just the smell, but the memories that are triggered by those smells. As noted things like the smell of blood can fill a persons mind with memories that, considering the source of those scents, won't be all that pleasant.
Then there are others.....

The scent of fresh baked bread sends me straight to my childhood and my grandmothers kitchen on bread baking day.

The scent of wet humus takes me home to a pacific northwest forest on a rainy day no matter where I am

The smell of old leather, horses or hay fills my head with pictures of our barn and those that have lived in it

Some pleasant, some not; no matter; it reminds me of my life, where I've been, who I've know, who I am and why.
