I was reading the other day and the concept of slumming came up. Slumming originated in London, where wealthy residents would visit the East End to observe the lives of the poor. Of course I started having dirty thoughts about this concept. Jump to the current time and you constantly see reports of how people are lonely, and that there is no longer a "third place" where people can get together between work and home.
In the story that is forming, a young woman just graduated college and got a very prestigious job at a big firm. After some time and saving up money, she decides she can't go on the American way. So she quits her job and sells most of her possessions, gets a beater car and hits the road. Similar to many TV shows from the 70s of a stranger arriving in a town, gets a job, helps someone then leaves.
The story I'm working on involves her first job being at a truck stop working the graveyard shift. Soon she discovers she could make more money and have more fun being a lot lizard. Does that for a while and finds she really enjoys it, but at some point decides it's time to move on and and since she loves slumming, she's on the lookout for other things to try.
