Sleeping pills?

Can anyone recommend some good sleeping pills that will knock you out? My partner says she can never fall asleep she just tosses all night and us extremely tired. Several days of this has made her extremely tired, angry, and sick. I have tried OTC "sleep aids" but nothing really works. She has a doctors app. Set up but it's not for a few weeks. Just thought I could find something to help out in the mean time.

The single greatest cause of sleeplessness is stress. If you can pinpoint the cause, then you can actively work to reduce it. In the mean time, I would suggest relaxing things, such as a long hot bath, massage, meditation/relaxation audios, etc.

Good luck, sleeplessness sucks!

I think you ask for recommendations in the wrong place... There is only one person who can give you an answer, and this person is called doctor.

Just a word of advice, be careful with sleeping pills... The side affects can be nasty... Maybe becoming physically exhausted (like with a hard workout) then a hot shower before bed....

Honestly, the thing that works best for me is natural and OTC: Melatonin.

My doctor suggested it because it's worked well for him for like 25 years and doesn't have any of the side effects that prescription drugs like Ambien, antidepressants or benzodiazepines come with. It doesn't knock me out, but it does help me relax and ease into a restful sleep if I'm prepared to go to bed (i.e. if I'm determined to stay up for one reason or another, it doesn't really work).

I've been using the Schiff Melatonin Plus from Costco for several years now. It's like $5 for 300 tablets or something. I usually take one, but if I really need to get to sleep or think I'll have trouble, I'll take two tablets. I haven't noticed any side effects, even when combined with medications that carry drowsiness as a major side effect, but everyone's different. I take them about 30 minutes before my bedtime, then relax and at least give getting to sleep a good try. If that doesn't work, I'll get up and do an easy activity for a bit, then go back to bed, and that probably gives me a 99% success rate. My husband was skeptical about Melatonin as well, but has found it to work very well for him, too.

Anyway, your partner should definitely talk to her doctor, but while she's waiting for her appointment, she may look into trying Melatonin and check with a pharmacist about giving it a try (just in case she takes anything else that could interact with it). There are some other supplements that support healthy sleep, but IIRC, they have more side effects and interactions, so I'd suggest giving the melatonin a go first.

natural cure

lavender in the room and on pillow can help.
Don't eat to soon before going to bed and if possible exercise and try to de stress.

I think it is natural to wake after a few hours sleep, this is when the tossing and turning occurs, don't be afraid of getting up maybe reading a book then when you feel tired go back to bed. Might be worth giving it a go maybe not lots of sleep but quality sleep.

As Phil said, exercise is great, but she should make sure she's not doing it too close to her bedtime. IIRC, experts recommend not exercising several hours before bed.

Also, does she consume any caffeine at all? I've noticed caffeine has a dramatic effect on my ability to get to sleep and have quality sleep, just in the past couple of years. One cup of coffee can throw my entire schedule off. I can usually do one cup of tea first thing in the morning, maximum, but even that can have a pretty dramatic effect. For some people, certain foods and other substances can also affect sleep, so she may need to look into what else she's consuming and exposed to.

This may be a silly question, but has she tried orgasming? That frequently works for me when nothing else does, provided I do it in a specific way (fantasize, orgasm, continue the fantasy right into sleep; if I get up or do anything else, it often invigorates me and makes getting to sleep very difficult).

Agree with Erica. Melatonin is a great help for me when I can't sleep. No real side effects, either, except my dreams tend to be more vivid. Not different, just kind of HD.

I drink a tea (don't laugh - it works - even my SO has tried it) by Celestial Seasonings called Sleepytime Extra - it has a plant called Valerian in it. One cup of that and I'm fighting to keep my eyes open.

Benadryl makes me "punch drunk" in the morning and I sleep too hard on stuff like Ambien. The active ingredient that makes you fall asleep in Advil PM is diphenhydramine citrate, a cousin of the diphenhydramine hydrochloride that comprises Benadryl.

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking for advice on this forum as long as the OP doesn't consider the advice to be a substitute for medical care.

Same here.

Ya know what they call the person that finishes LAST in medical school? They call him/her Doctor. And somewhere there is the worst doctor in the world. Think about that one. (There is always a worst at anything) I forget which comedian said those lines but I was reminded about it.

Sometimes I use a sound machine by my bed to relax me. It has a few settings and the ocean waves do the trick most of the time.

I don't have trouble falling asleep, I have trouble staying asleep. I lay down and within minutes I'm asleep but a few hours later, I'm wide awake.

Will the Melatonin help with that?

Without it, I rarely sleep through the night. With it, no problem. It's cheap and found in any drug store. See if it works.

be very careful what you take and try to avoid at all costs Acetaminophen which is in most Tylenol products. if you drink, do not mix the two as Tylenol (if taken at the recommended dose) can and will kill your liver.

Granted they did just lower the dosage but Acetaminophen is a very dangerous drug and deadly if you mix in any alcohol

I think there is a physical or hormonal change after sex, the male will sleep and the woman wakes up, something to do with the nesting instinct.

That would explain the small pile of sticks and dead leaves I found out the end of the bed this morning...

And it's even more complicated:
I can drink a bottle of coke at 10pm and sleep well.
A self-made cup of ice coffee (so not caffeine-enhanced) keeps me up till 4am.

Took me some time to figure this out.

I have been an insomniac for more than 20 years. I have tried everything...sex (more awake after than before), reading stimulates my brain, as does watching tv and fantasizing. I have tried advil PM, melatonin and valarium...with no success. About 5 years ago I finally asked my doctor for a prescription (ambien). I take 1/2 pill each night and it works great. I'm not at all tired in the morning and no hang over affect. Everyone responds differently to it. If I take a whole pill (on nights I know I am not even close to being tired), I make sure I do not use my phone or internet as I have been known to drunk dial/IM friends. Likewise, my hubby calls this version of me Dirty Debbie because I lose any inhabitions I have in "real" life! He hasn't complained yet, and said many times I continue to suprise him!

Oh, and please go easy on me...this is my 1st post!

Welcome. :)

Unlike many of the others, melatonin doesn't work for me. Melatonin works best for those whose body doesn't produce enough of the hormone and I do, so taking it does absolutely nothing.

As NM said, there are many many MANY reasons for not being able to sleep, and it's best to have a doctor diagnose the root of it. However, in the interim, if I desperately need to sleep, I try some Valerian root which helps. I also go to bed and wake up around the same time every single day, and try (and I might add fail miserably ) to keep stress at bay. And I avoid watching TV 30 minutes before I turn in.

This works for me, but it may not work for anyone. YKMV *shrugs*

While I use Tylonol PM or the off-brand version rarely I use something else more frequently. I grabbed my initial box as a whim, thinking, "It can't make the insomnia worse..."

These little drops contain vanilla, chamomile and valarian, all of which promote relaxation and sleep. They actually help calm my mind- I take one while reading in bed and get sleepy pretty quickly with them. I tend to stay asleep long too, which is a blessing given how crappy I sleep due to medical issues some nights.

I also adore the fact that I don't feel anything the next morning from them- no groggy "WTF- it can't be time to get up" type sensations.
