The Republican Party didn't even exist until the 1850's, and one of their strongest goals was the abolition of slavery. When Lincoln, a Rep., was elected, most slave states tried to secede. Whether they should have been allowed to do so or not is a moot point now.

I think the government apology was fitting. As for reparations, no one is around now who had anything to do with it and a whole lot of effort has gone in to equalizing opportunity. But, if anyone who feels they are personally due address, I'd be quite willing for the government to foot the bill for transportation to whatever originating country they wanted to go to. Most Americans have a heritage of accestors arriving here either penniless or indentured in some way. So, I'd actually be willing for the government to pay the way back for anyone who feels they aren't doing a whole heck of a lot better in the States than from wherever else their ancestors originated.

There might be some kind of a precedent here. I know my ancestors a thousand or so yeards ago were treated quite shabbily by England. If any reparations were to be paid in the USA, maybe persons of English descent could bill Her Majesty's government for the same kind of thing.

I should bill the Visigoths. And the Danes.

An ancestor on my fathers' side arrived in the US indentured to a blacksmith around 1810. He paid back what he owed in 8 years and opened his own blacksmith shop. I wonder if I could petition the government for payback of the 8 years of the salary he didn't earn in 2009 dollars?

That makes about as much sense as this reparation argle-bargle.

Why give the Mule the short straw? Harness JBJ to the plough and we'll make short work of 40 acres - dependin' on whether I can find that big ole mule whip!:)

What would a precedent established in U.S. law have to do with UK law?

I am being facetious, because I know that no such thing would erver happen. At the same time, those advocating reparations cite payments made by Germany to concentration camp survivors and the descendants of those who did not survive as precedent.

By the way, I did say "some kind of precedent" which means it would not be exactly a precedent, but would be similar to one.

The government apology is a plastic trophy for blacks, and a plastic fuzzy for whites. It reminds me of an event I witnessed in Vietnam.

A sergeant I worked with was desperate for promotion, to keep his career in the military. Mostly he was a drunk and a barnacle, and made no efforts to upgrade his skills via training, and his evaluations via improved performance. So a legend was created for him.

His friends cherry-picked personnel records of others, extracted extraordinary deeds and events belonging to others, manufactured the paperwork, and added them to the sergeant's file. Someone nominated him for an award, and he won the competition, plus the promotion he coveted. This is what happened with the slavery apology.

People removed from slavery for 144 years got together and exchanged plastic awards that celebrate their participation in those times.

With everything going on in this country and the world the US Senate could find something more important to do that apologise for slavery.
What a complete waste of time and money.

Its easy cotton to pick.

Its like sending every child in America a testimonial conferring ABOVE AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE to the holder of the certificate. It confirms what every mother knows about her own child, and doesnt fool her for an instant about your's. She adds it to her collection of Publishers Clearing House notifications.

I have a theory for celebrations. My theory postulates that there is an inverse relationship and correlation between deeds and the level of celebration they receive. All good deeds are ignored, or punished if they come to the attention of the media.

Slavery is the best thing that ever happened to blacks. If not for slavery, most current black Americans would be running around the jungle in a grass skirt, chucking a spear at a wild animal for their dinner. Offense idea? Perhaps. But try to refute it.

Slavery was expensive. It was a perfect socialist system where a few toiled and everyone ate. Certainly no one cried when Emancipation came along, because from the moment the Republicans freed the slaves planters no longer had to care for women, children, old folks, or the crippled. Planters paid each worker a wage, and the worker was on his own for food, shelter, clothes, etc.

If the people responsible for slavery are to pay reparations, we need to examine the entire process.

African blacks were enslaved by Arabs or other African blacks, who would then need to pay reparations.

The African blacks were then transported, mainly by European ships to various places, including the USA. The Europeans would then need to pay reparations.

The African blacks were then used mainly to raise cotton, rice and a few other labor intensive crops, mainly in the South. The use of African black slaves was enabled by the Democratic Party. The residents of the South and Democrats would then need to pay reparations.

The Republican party was then basically formed as an anti-slavery movement. The people of the North then waged a war to free the African black slaves. In the course of the war, something like 600,000 people died, mainly Caucasions. It might be said that the descendents of those who died or were wounded, have more than paid any reparations due.

Let's make it simple. My ancestor William Cotton brought the first slave to Virginia in 1619. So send the reparations bills to me.

I think that should cover the issue quite nicely!

I expect the Democrats to pay reparations about the time you need a wheelbarrow of $100 bills for the parking meter.

Personally I'd like to see every black get the mule first.

The time is late (I'm sounding a bit "House of Frankenstein, " a childs show I grew up with) now. Will revisit, JBJ. Not sure I can answer to you, though.

This comes from ignorance, there was civilization in Africa. The first export from Africa was books, not people.

The state of Africa today is due largely to colonialism.

While I'm not American Black , I find some of the comments in this thread pretty offensive.
