Skype replacement

Signal is the best imo.
Very safe and secure and fast.

I have used it for 10 yrs and never had a problem nor ever a spam text in all that time.

I does require a # but it uses usernames and doesn't reveal it so you can remain anonymous.

Sessions doesn't not require a # but I have heard it can be very slow relaying and delivering the messages
Sessions is trash!! Itโ€™s layout sucks hard to navigate but it is totally secure they say

If you will be expanding your use of Discord to include more Lit friends, I would suggest either changing your Discord name, or making a separate Discord account than the one you use for work. When you join a new server, most will let you change your server-nickname, but your default name will be visible until then.

Another option would be to create your own server, and set role permissions so that only you or those you trust can invite others

I have two separate discord accounts. One associated with work and the work email.
I created a server but don't know what to do with it. ๐Ÿ˜‚
I'm not in any group chats-anywhere. I was in some on discord before but that went to hell in a hand basket ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ On Telegram I use secret chats so they are encrypted and my info is secure(well as secure as any of this is).
In reality we are just hoping that what we are doing or who we are talking to isn't all that important to anyone. The idea of internet security is a fallacy but we buy into it so we feel comfortable sharing online.

@Kitty_so_frisky What you shared about what can be controlled in your own server is great to know. What sucks is that I thought I was with a group that understood people's privacy but I was mistaken. Live and learn I guess.
I think that y'all must be in more chats than I am. ๐Ÿ˜‚
I'm sure I'll manage.

The two discord accounts is sensible, we don't use it for work we use Teams but Microsoft bundles your account together, and I want to avoid the possibility of sending a dick pic to a doctor, social worker, lawyer or even a colleague, so maybe I'll look into discord ๐Ÿ˜‹

I have been using Discord for several years and still donโ€™t know all there is to know about it! Despite the sometimes clunky feel, the features are deep. Iโ€™ve barely scratched the surface with what bots can do there.
Most of the servers Iโ€™m in are FFXIV/video game-related, so they can do things like show characters stats, market board info of certain items between different worlds, maximizing output of a farm-like system, info on current hunts, etc. A former D&D server had a bot that rolled dice and showed 5e spell info and monster stats. Iโ€™ve seen other casual bots where you can do things like collect daily cookies and use them to play slots too ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ
Some of my Discord servers have thousands of people, so I have all alerts off. For this reason, it will never be my main replacement for 1-on-1 real-time messaging, but it does have a lot of cool features.

I also have 2 Discord accounts. 1 is mainly used for a group of gamer friends who does movie watch parties on Fridays and TV shows on Mondays. Sometimes someone else here will be interested in the movie (minus our chatter) so I can log the alt into roommateโ€™s laptop and plug that into the TV in the living room without leaving them alone with access to my main Discord and any frisky messages it may contain ๐Ÿคญ

I don't think that was supposed to be a tease but it definitely does make me wonder what they are now ๐Ÿ˜…

On another platform I use, a number of people have suggested Telegram... and lately I've just found that anyone who asks me to add them is either a scammer (AI photos, many other things) or pay-to-play.
Has anyone else had this experience or am I just unlucky/an idiot?

My preference is SimpleX, which I found to have a better model than Teleguard or Session for anonymously using the software.

Google Chat or Discord are probably the best options. The whole appeal of Skype for me is that 1) it's easy to create new accounts as needed, and 2) it can be used for texting, audio, video calls, and voice notes all in a single app.

Discord has voice notes, I believe, so that makes it probably the closest replacement in functionality, but the UI is not great for these purposes and I suspect it'll never get as many frisky users as Skype

(Signal and Telegram both fail because it's a pain to make new accounts โ€” you need multiple phone numbers to do that.)

I'm giving telegram a go but I do seem to be getting some nuisance messages, saying that Skype is the same, I might need to get one of those data broker removal apps for a bit

Iโ€™ve never gotten any kind of messsges from telegram. What are they like?

Really??? Iโ€™ve never gotten a one. I think I may have everything private though but Iโ€™m not sure.
I keep it private, but every person I've talked with has not been ... real?

But that's because the other site is... descending into a pay-to-play message board

What other site?
Iโ€™ve only added people from lit that Iโ€™d chatted with and then we exchanged usernames. Iโ€™ve never been anywhere I could add random folks. On telegram, where does that happen?

I'm on Fetlife. Mostly just for chatting and mentoring... or I used to be...
It's much the same... chat with someone, exchange user names... then... all the warning signs start showing up

Same. I've only used Telegram for a couple of people and a couple of groups though, but I've not had any issues with spam on there.

Google Chat is all new to me, but works well, and very similar to Skype (which I've not really used for years anyway, until very recently anyway). I've tended to use SnapChat and Instagram, with no real problems, apart from Instagram seems to be quite fond of shutting down certain types of accounts so might not be everyones cup of tea (I use it from non-naughty stuff too, so works for me).

That started for me after I joined the MLB chat room.
I'm convinced my phone number got out there somehow, I've had it on Skype and telegram, either that or just irresistible it's a beautiful Filipino ladies who just happened to have email accounts registered in Nigeria ๐Ÿ˜…

Bots are so cruel with their games
