Am totally new to skype and cannot figure out how to find public chats, or how to search out people with common interests. Seems you can search only by skype name

If someone can let me know, I'd appreciate it.

Skype is a program that use your high speed internet to make calls. It started as computer to computer communication program, however, today, in addition to computers, you can call regular phone numbers for a fee. Computer to computer "calls" are free.

Have you tried Skype forums? It would make a lot more sense asking these questions there.

Ah! Thanks for the information. 'Cept wouldn't work for me as my "high speed" internet really isn't so high speed. Frikken Comcast!
