Skype & kik

I sometimes have people ask if I have either kik or skype and say i don't.
So, what are they? How do they work? Most important how safe are they?

They are messaging platforms that also facilitate pic and video sharing. Kik is a bit easier to use but phone based only. They seem pretty secure but I am no tech guru
