my dog just got skunked

vinegar/tomato juice is a wives tale.

i've found a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap... does it work?

shes outside tied as of now, and I checked for scratches and i've checked her eyes every 3 minutes since it happened to make sure shes ok till we take her to the vet tomorrow.

help!!

All I know is that my grandmother forced my uncle to take a tomato juice bath before he was let back into the house after being sprayed by a skunk. Good luck. Wish I had better advice.

Bummer babe, having been there once I know that the tomato bath works...kinda. It's a really strong smell and is incredibly hard to get rid of. We had to lock the pooch in the bathroom over night with the window open and a fan going and it still stunk for a few days but most of it faded after the first 12-24 hours.

Suckage, hope your pooch is ok.

Aphil: I actually know people that have that stuff very close by, but they're sleeping. I will make sure to bug them in the morning. Along with a trip to the vet, or a call at least.

justlurkin: the vinegar/tomato just masks the smell for a bit, doesn't actually get rid of the skunk "oil" It may work on humans better bc we have our own oils and not as much hair and other soaps avaiable to us.

potatohead: shes in the cage in the kitchen with the back door open with all fans pointing outwards ... and all towels and such used in the process are outside waiting to be brought to the cleaners (though...I may just trash them instead)

Its absolutely terrible... my stomach (or my SOs) wasn't sitting well today anyway bc of dinner and a party we threw last night... we both had long days, and lit wasn't working for me for a while today.

Would shampoo help? If you could wash the oils from the skunk spray out of her fur, it might cut down the stink.

Washing and time, lots of time and it will go away.

Since you can't toss the dog away like you can clothing, you'll just have to put up with it for awhile.

I got sprayed in college, I wasn't very popular in the dorms for several days. Not that I was popular before that.

eeeeeeeeew skunk i feel sorry for you we had a path the skunks followed and it went by my bedroom and they would spray in that area.

Good luck but shave the dog and burn the fur.

Having never come close to a skunk in my life, not even in a zoo I may not be best qualified to comment. Or sympathize.

But I have years of experience of washing things out of other things.

Oil needs to be emulsified to be gotten rid of. Think oil and water experiments and they added washing up liquid.

So, the dog needs washing. But you need to use a shed load of if and put that on the fur first. Rub it in then slowly add water and build up a lather. Rinse thoroughly.

That's how to get rid of oil. Works when a child puts oil in its hair.

Peroxide may make the dog have platinum blonde fur a la Marilyn Monroe..

Give it a try.

KindaKinky: we've run out of peroxide and baking soda so it will have to do because we're not spending money on the vet.

gypsywitch: heyya lovely lady! I'm a little stressed out, but dealing with it- other then that, I've been dandy- I knew it was going all too well for me.

GeorgeWBush: Actually never occured to me to shave the pup. They do it with long hair pups in the summer for easy management. She has short hair, but not down the to skin short. its between pitbull and lab fur... this is a goood idea.

Mistress Lady X : yes, yes, rinse lather repeat.
We were using the peroxide concotion I found... 4 bottles of peroxide later I noticed her brownish undertone overtake her black fur for the most part and couldn't figure out why.

She isn't monroe by any standards, but more of a reddish brown black. She looks awesome actually ... but still stinks a little.

Actually even funnier would have been...."the smell would have been worse than the skunk" or something to that effect.

I dunno about the drooling though. Two legged hot bitches lead to quite a puddle of spit.

Definitely shave the dog...few years back my dog got skunked and everytime his fur got wet...even the tiniest bit wet, he smelled like skunk all over again...I had him shaved and it was SO much better.

and shaving a dog isn't stupposed to help AT ALL they said (we called 3 of them) that the skunkedness sits on the skin and in the dog's pores and the hair ... that shaving would make it worse.

LOL That's about how long it takes the smell to go away ifyou DON'T bathe the dog. At least, every time my greyhound got skunked, that's about how long it took.

My father-in-law has a proven solution to get rid of skunk funk. I'll get it and post i up here...I think it involves peroxide, but apparently it was developed to counteract the molecular structure of the offensive oder compound. Good luck, Blue

Sorry to hijack, but this skunk story comes to mind...When we were at school, the house nextdoor was occupied by Asian students. One day, we were watching TV, and the students were running around in front of our window. We couldn't figure out what the hell they were doing, but thought their pet might have escaped or something. All of a sudden, we hear a scream and loud chatter back and forth frantically in a foreign language. Then, the smell came through our window, and lasted about 3 days. We went out to tell the skunked guy how he could get rid of the smell, but the reality was that skunks are only found in North America, and he thought it was some type of animal that he could capture and domesticate like a dog or cat. Pretty bad mistake, huh?

Actually, that kind of depends on how sharply you define "Skunk."

The North American Skunk has relatives in Europe, Asia and South Americ. Plus, there are several other animals with a similar defense mechanism that can be found all over the world.

The problem with our North American Skunks is that they're CUTE which isn't true for it's relatives.

For future reference, I'd start with Dawn Lemon scent dishwashing liquid for the first two washes, if I were unfortunate enough to get skunked. I'd follow up the Dawn with a Vanilla Scented soap -- the stronger the vanilla scent the better.

I don't know if adding vanilla to the soda/peroxide/dish-soap formula would increase it's effectiveness, but I've found that Vanilla will counteract (not just cover up) most odors -- even if it does make me ravenous when I use vanilla scentd air fresheners/candles.

we just used what we had. we're following the citrus trend that has been sweeping the nation by storm ... so citrus dish soap is what we had.

we've been using whatever we can to get the smell out of the house now.
Fans pointed outwards, doors open to circulate fresh air in. Deodorizers, carpet powders/vaccuuming, candles, incents ...

which, I think is giving me more of a head ache. I am not looking foward to her getting wet anytime soon (rain/snow season will start eventually in VT) I really REALLY want to have her shaved now - but supposedely that doesn't help. OI ... I am NOT happy.
