Stupid dog god skunked! ARGH!

Ok, so I did baking soda/hydrogen peroxide bath on her, and it helped...

but the whole house STILL smells like it. And she didn't even rub up against anything!!!

So, my question is, have any of you TRIED any of these remedies, and do they work:

1. Boiling vinegar

2. Get a mixture of vinegar, ammonia, and vanilla. Spread that around the affected area.

(note: aren't you not supposed to mix ammonia and vinegar? or is that ammonia and bleach?)

3. Place some fresh coffee grinds down, big bowls of them.

Any other suggestions, advice!?

I remember reading about tomato juice for skunk odor?

And it is ammonia and bleach that is a bad mix. I worked at McDonald's when I was in high school and the kid doing maintenance managed to mix those two. They had to take him to the hospital when he started coughing up blood.

Poor puppy. And your poor house!

Try bathing the dog in tomato juice. I've heard that's the best way to get rid of the smell on the dog.

No ideas on how to air out your hose though. Sorry.

No wonder. That mixture will give off pure chlorine gas. Gas gets into lungs, combines with moisture in there to create hydrochloric acid. Not a good thing to have in your lungs.

I hope he wasn't damaged too badly.

Just got off the phone with a friend at the vet's office. She said to repeat the hydrogen peroxide/vinegar mix, but to add a small amount of dishwashing soap, preferably lemon-scented. Febreze for the carpets, and keep the pup outside for a while.

Best wishes! :rose:

Yeah, I did another bath this morning... and I did add the tsp soap, I forgot to mention that :)

I think keeping her outside is a good idea... skunks are nocturnal, aren't they? I just worry she'll go sniffing back at the place in the yard where it sprayed and we'll have to do ANOTHER bath...

right now I'm boiling vinegar and have all the windows open and fans on...

smells like coloring easter eggs in here! lol but that's better than skunk!

Thanks for the advice, all!

No, they got him to the hospital quickly. He did stay overnight, and I remember he had a husky voice for a few days, but he seemed to be ok.

At the time McDonalds had little packets for cleaning supplies (they still might, I don't know). You had to mix up a bleach solution, for example, and run it through the lines of the shake machines, etc., while disinfecting. Apparently he decided to mix a packet of floor scrubber (ammonia) with the bleach packet. Ooops.

Glad to hear that sarahh. Chlorine was the first gas used in WWI. A lot of people were badly hurt by it.

Good to hear, Selena. Yes, skunks are nocturnal. There's one living in my area. I've encountered him (her?) a couple of times. We give each other a wide berth.

Too late for anymore advice now....

but next time ... tomatoe juice bath for poochy or V8 works too!

As far as the smell in the house...Oust for the air, Fabreeze for the carpet.

Or

Go out to the pet store and buy a De-Skunker. The tomatoe juice works until the dog gets wet, don't know why. A De-Skunker works better than tomatoe juice. Get a bottle for the next time.

cat litter, that's a good idea!

I put an inch of cat litter in the bottom of all my garbage cans before i put the bag in, to absorb odors...

I'm calling the Wildlife Management right now... this is the second time this year (the first time, it was the cat that got skunked!) and since my husband is talking about buying a rifle, I figure I better find a humane way to get rid of Mr. Skunk. I know where it lives... there's a house in disrepair 2 houses away, and its home is in their shed... but they don't care and don't want to pay to have it removed!

I know two of our other neighbors have had problems, maybe if we take up a collection... I have no idea how much "skunk removal" might cost!

Just wanted to make sure you had the recipe proportions correct.

1 gallon of water w. 1/4 c. baking soda, 1 pint of peroxide and a tsp of dawn (best grease cutter) Do NOT rinse off. Simply sponge into coat, allow to dry and brush out. My cat got skunked this past year too.
