Sitting in the captain's chair, spinning in slow circles...

Stopped pondering about Battletech, and even tribadism, so I'll pester you guys.

Lots of us publish in different categories here on Lit, and sometimes our work tends to be heavy in one category as opposed to others. Most of my works at this point in time fall into the Incest/Taboo category.

Oddly enough, though, that's not my favourite category of story to write. To be honest, that would be either Novels/Novellas, for my historical fiction stories, or Humour/Satire, because I love making people laugh. Of my fourteen different stories/series published on here, only one falls under Novels so far, while two inhabit Humour/Satire.

By comparison, six are squarely parked in Incest/Taboo.

All that being said, here's my question- what do you feel is your favourite or preferred category to work in? Even if you haven't published in it yet, where would you like to submit a story to?

I'm just curious, and like to know these things about people.

I know, I know. "Damn Canadians and their overt friendliness..."

My favorites are Mature and Romance but I’ve submitted stories in IT and Non-Erotic as well. I dabble with all of them and fortunately I have an editor that is able to bitch slap me back to reality when I get too far out of line.

What constitutes 'too far out of line'?

A lot (okay, most) of my stories traverse several categories in one chapter, so I just designate them according to my over-arching theme for that submission (and hope Laurel agrees with me).

A lot of my stuff has gone to I/T as well. Given the views you get there, it's hard for me to not put things there. My preferred category would probably be Romance, but the readers there have restrictive tastes. I have a long-term interest in SciFi, but it's hard for me to write.

I aim to write in as many categories as I can. Right now two of my five stories are Ex/Voy, so I guess that's my "most common". If I could come up with a really good idea, and find time to do the world-building, I'd love to have a couple of SciFi/Fantasy stories.

It usually goes down like this...

No!

But,

No!

Why not?

You’re writing a romance story you idgit. You don’t need a description of Gene Simmon’s tongue and John Holmes dick in it. Keep that crap out of this story and save it for when you write something in Loving Wives.

But.

No! And I deleted the entire scene with the rabbit fur gloves, the inversion boots and the ping pong paddle. Where do you come up with this shit?

But,

No!

Yes Dear.

I take it there is a state of connubial fusion between your and your editor? ;)

Have Mercy no! I’m just smart enough to know that when you find a good woman you keep her happy by agreeing with her. I’d be lost without her busting my balls with my literary screw ups. I can spin a good story but she is the one that puts the finishing touches on them corects the speling misteaks and puts commas semicolons and hypenmarks were they should bee.

And for that, I call her Dear.

I have tried about half of the categories, but I think Romance and Mature are probably my favourites. Romance has quite a few ‘rules’. Get them right and you can have a red H. Get them wrong and you won’t die wondering. Mature is a bit more forgiving; as long as you have a story to tell and least one character over the age of 35, you can ‘wander’ a bit. Erotic Coupling is a bit hit and miss, but it seems to be a bit of a catch-all for what doesn’t fit elsewhere - so you are never quite sure who the readers will be. :)

Agree with Sam re Mature and Romance - my strongest rated stories and most appreciative comments have come from those folk. EC is ok for what doesn't fit neatly into those two categories.

I've only dabbled in I & T - seems to me that you need to write something stunningly brilliant to separate yourself from the penguins there; and I loved me mum but not like that. I'll wander there one day with a sibcest piece, I reckon, but not for a while.

With 235 stories posted here, it's hard to keep track of where I have written and where I ain't. My highest scores seem to come from BDSM and romance.

All of my favorite stories are my fantasy work. I have a strong Mature slate in this name, but those are really just ideas that amuse me and don't have any greater story to feed into.

Really, the same is true of most everything outside of my fantasy pieces. That's why very few of them ever continue. I've already used whatever amusing little spark generated the idea, and it was never meant to go beyond whatever relationship dynamic or sex scene I've already written. The characters and setting were created around something else as vehicles for it.

In my fantasy work, the characters and setting come first, and the stories arise from them.

My most-submitted categories are Interracial and First Time but I also have stories in Incest, Mature, Science Fiction, Loving Wives, Group Sex and Romance. Oh, and Non-Con. Except for a couple of my early First Time and Interracial stories I've managed to get those red H's in every category so I'm more than a little happy over that.

Not sure what category this "A Troll is Haunting Tex's" should go in tho. Maybe SF or Rotic Horror although it's more humor and action than horror but the views are low there so I might just stick it in Interracial and keep my fingers crossed.

I would love to do one in horror. I have one nearly finished just needs some polishing and editing.

I mostly put stuff in EC. Seems like a default for everything and I get worried I'll try to put something in the wrong category so I just do EC.

For my last series though I did romance and it's doing okay there.

Fuck all that wordy pussy shit. Go for the Gold. Be a glutton for punishment and hit LW. Bare your cheeks and prepare for a butt whoopin'.

How are the views in EC? I could dump my story there too but it's the views I'm more interested in getting than being competitive in the competition.

I have a story or two that could go in Horror, but I'm reasonably certain it would be rejected outright for being too intense and, well, horrific. EH seems to be the home of succubi and vampires, and the stories involving them tend to be not horrific, so I dunno.

I guess I just have a few stories that will remain unread and unpublished.

Not the end of the universe, mind. I'm still happy in Humour and Novels.

Plenty of views there, I suppose. For me having only one story divided up in countless chapters I have ~found 1000 views on my newest chapter, with 11 votes, after a single day. And so far they're pretty accepting as well, with 4 out of 6 chapters having a 'H' rating. Or are they just easily pleased? I generally see only 3 of 4 with an 'H' tag in the list of new submissions, of course today lists 7 of them just to prove me wrong.

My personal preference is I/T though, but I usually end up just reading those stories rather than write them. There's a lot of nice stuff in there and after I started reading BiscuitHammer's stories I felt I didn't measure up in terms of competition for the top stories ;)

No, just kidding there. I'm already glad I actually managed to be able to post a story in EC, considering how my plot tends to reach out to all kinds of categories within a single story. It's probably also why it's so friggin' long, with aspects of non-human, incest, romance and everything else managing to incorporate itself into the story. So far the EC people haven't really seem taken offense.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy is my main haunt.

I have posted in Erotic Horror once, EC twice and I/T once. My I/T story has more views than most of my other stuff combined. :)

Since I usually write plot first, kinks second, I'll probably never will post in the single-kink categories like Anal or Lesbian. My latest chapter of "Fading Stars" has group sex, tentacles, blow jobs and futanari, all in one scene. Without the umbrella of the sci-fi plot, there would be no way I could post that in a single category ;)

Battletech? Bring on the MAD-3M!

View/Votes/Ratings in EC are extremely variable. I'm not sure I see much rhyme or reason to it. I've seen people get good results there, but for me the views aren't great, the scores aren't great, and the readers tend to be disengaged. The views/vote is pretty high.

I think you're a bit unfair here. Every category has these 'rules'. I/T has them, LW has them, IR, SF/F, NC, all have their specific set of rules. And the readers of these categories have certain expectations. If you don't meet them, you'll get bad ratings.

I don't publish a classical love story in NC and I don't post a story which plays in a BDSM-dungeon in Romance even if the protagonists fall in love in the end.

If SamScribble was slightly unfair...

Allow me to go full-on prejudiced...

It's true, each category has its own unique hive-mind. While some, like Romance, tend to represent a pretty gestalt with expectations of decent writing, others can be a little more base in their desires. Consider the Morlocks of NC, or even the ravening Tyranids of LW, and you find a truly unforgiving mindset even the Kree Supreme Intelligence would balk at.

While these are not universal truths, such as could be passed as literotica laws of physics, they are pretty hard-and-fast rules about what one can expect in offering up your works to the hive-minds. Sometimes, respectful consideration. Other times, you're messily torn apart and rendered down into biomass for easy consumption by a remorseless and hateful, gnawing hunger.

Wow, I really should write for the Black Library.

I'll admit to some prejudice against readers in certain categories, but only based on empirical evidence.
