Simple question for the Prognosticators

Will Democrats gain control of the Senate?

  • They'll have it: 53 or more seats

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters
    20
  • Poll closed .

Looking back on the election last night, it seems this was probably the most interesting since Dan Rather asked Norman Mailer who was running for Mayor of New York City the question:

Rather: "If elected, what is the first thing you will do?"

Mailer: "DEMAND A RECOUNT!"

:D :D

Don't bother with the prize for me, as I'm kinda glad that the Republicans got a kick in the ass. Maybe it will be a wake up call for them as they were more like Democrats than Republicans the past 12 years.

Personally, I voted a straight Libertarian ticket just to show the Republicans - see that, all those Libertarian votes could have been yours if you hadn't abandoned your platform.

Interesting title, Pure. It seems to me that one of the big things that worked against the Republicans in this election was the weariness that came from being called "Traitor" everytime a citizen tried to voice a dissenting opinion.

now there's an honest opinion, zeb. in truth, other than flirting with 'social conservativism' (anti gay-marriage), the dominant Republican group is neither fiscally or traditionally 'conservative,' nor especially connected to 'libertarian' [minimal government intrusion] or 'laisser faire' ideals. (I distinguish 'laisser faire' as in A. Smith from 'crony capitalism' which is giving un-bid gov contracts to corps run by one's buddies.

hi jenny; if you google it [NDCIT], the book was a classic of paranoia and hate--and a kind of best seller. :rose:

I'm not American, but if I was there's no way I'd vote Libertarian.

I'm not fond of anarchists.

There are many things I don't agree with that are part of the Republican platform. There are also many things that I don't agree with that are part of the Libertarian platform. But there are much more things in the Democratic platform which I don't agree with.

So what does that make me? A LibRepcrat?

Rob, I am not an anarchist. I believe in the rule of law which our country was founded. I just don't believe that the government should have it's nose in my business.

And one of the planks in the Libertarian platform which I don't agree with is it failure to address this nations security.

anarchists:

there are some pretty appealing examples of those opposing governmental authority in principle.

Godwin, a while back.
Zapata,
Thoreau

and one of my faves
Emma Goldman.

Noam Chomsky is partial to the label, as to current people.

There is an old canard that anarchists are especially into violence or 'bomb throwing.' In fact, some are/were pacifist, and others essentially favored armies operating in self defense.

---
socialist anarchism, it might be mentioned, is a valuable counter to leninist socialism that has powerful, dictatorial, central authority.

not all anarchists are socialists, it almost goes without saying; some declare themselves 'individualist.'

any of youse care to share the secrets of your success?

Oh, hooray. We Democrats have won the right to clear a mine field during an earthquake, with our hands tied, using spoons held in our teeth, while the president uses the field as a driving range.

"Fore!"

Cue the tap dancers.

US foreign policy is a minefield, as witness, McKinley, Wilson, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon/Kissinger etc. Tension between war criminality and benevolence.

BUT the thrust of social conservatism *has* been damped a little by the political demise of its stars like Santorum and Allen. GWB probably never believed it anyway, so he is allowed an opportunistic shift.

I'm wondering about how those five presidents are lumped together. I can see your complaints with four of them, but what about Wilson? I don't know of any of his foreign policies you would fault, except maybe not entering WW1 sooner.
