My grandnephew came home with us on the long drive and we had a difficult time providing him with snacks. It seemed that everything I took along from the long drive was the wrong thing.

Can I have some suggestions for next time and for when he comes to hang at my house? Thanks.

I had braces years ago, but still as an adult. Popcorn was bad, pretzels were better as snack material. Other than staying away from the sticky/chewy stuff like gum drops, taffy, regular gum, etc., I don't remember limited myself as to what types of snacks I could eat due to the braces.

Modern braces are a lot different than what braces were only a decade or so ago.

My granddaughter has braces and a list of things she can't eat. She can't have nuts, gum, or sticky candy. Chips and the like are OK (I think -- at least I don't remember getting that plaintive, "oh, granpa, you know I can't eat that," from her over chips.)

Blondgirl, I could ask my granddaughter for a list of appropriate snacks, but I'm sure her tastes are different than your grandnephew's. The best thing to do is give him a fiver and stop at a 7-11 type store and let him buy his own snacks.

I had braces four long years

Great suggestion to just give him the money to chose his own, or at the very least ask his parents what he is allowed.

Another Def. thing thats are of the question-

unpeeled apples

They never inhibited me from eating chips or other *soft* fruits, like banana's, grapes, cherries or strawberries.

Thanks for the tips--he will be here this weekend, I'll stock up on the fruit!

Any more suggestions would be welcome.

I am wearing braces now, fortunately only for a couple of months, and have not had any problem with any foods (except corn on the cob) or chewing gum. However, as an adult I probably tend to be more careful.

I would stay away from all candy, popcorn, nuts, gum and any item that may be sticky or hard to chew. Potato chips, pretzels, most cookies should work. Fruit always works, but you may have to section apples, nectarines, etc...

Also, it's even more important to brush after eating. Get him a toothbrush to keep at your house.
