But it's been a while and I forgot the mechanics. What does it mean when my author page shows my new submission in draft? I thought it would go straight to pending.

It means you haven't submitted it yet. You need to get back into the submission page and click on "Preview" at the bottom. At the end of your story you have two buttons: one saves a draft and the other submits the story.
