Only recently, I have begun adding tags. I confess I didn't do it before partly because I find some of them annoying in some ways. Some are almost paragraph long. Shouldn't a tag be a quick snippet? Sometimes they blend into the text, and I dislike the distraction. Some are so busy, it competes with the context of the current message. I know I am even more conscious of them now that I want to include them in my posts.

I'm probably more anal about these things than most folks, but I was wondering since I've joined the ranks of those who use them. What are your thoughts when you see these messages?

What do you think is an ideal sig line?

Are you ever annoyed or distracted by them?

How often do you think they should be changed?

What do you like least about them?

Ever have any funny or odd thoughts after reading some? Share one please.

Thanks.

Peace,

daughter

I think sig tags add a little personality to the posts. Having said that I don't like the long ones, or ones that grab your attention by moving pics etc I think they detract from the words above the sig line.

I've had mine turned off for quite some time now, daughter. The long and busy ones were just too distracting on the page for me.

In my opinion, they should be one sentence long, with no pictures attached.

If I was reading them, it would be interesting if they were changed on a regular basis, but since I'm not reading them, I suppose my opinion doesn't really matter here. :)

Hey Daughter

What do you think is an ideal sig line?
One that gives insight. I want to learn something about you, just by reading it.

Are you ever annoyed or distracted by them?
I've yet to be. It's hard to annoy me. And distraction is welcomed!

How often do you think they should be changed?
As you change, change your words.
Choose of words, for me, reflect mood, growth, inspiration, and spiritual development.

What do you like least about them?
Hmmm...Ok. If I must give one thought, I'll say I don't care for those with pure agenda in mind ie. to hurt others.

Ever have any funny or odd thoughts after reading some? Share one please.
Daily. I admit arousal. I admit laughter. I admit intrigue. A few times, fear. The fact that I feel such emotions from a signature line is humorous. Not exactly stimulating answers, I know. :D

Mine change frequently, and vary quite a bit in length. If lyrics from a song catch me, I include them for awhile... then something else comes to mind, and out the old ones go.

I don't like the one's that include animations, because they constantly distract me while I'm reading. The REALLY long ones also bother me a bit, especially when the person who's sig it is generally posts short messages. I don't think your sig line should be longer than your average post.

I enjoy most sigs though, because it gives you a glimpse of the person's personality, or where they're coming from that day.

Too many too big

I have them turn off as well. I don't use the cookies, so I have to log on everytime I'm here, so sometimes I just lurk around before logging on, and then I check out a sig line.

What are your thoughts when you see these messages?

In most cases it gives a little insight as to who the person is, and sometimes they are just funny!

What do you think is an ideal sig line?

Something that either gives insight or is special to that person. In my sig line, the first line is a little bit about me. The second item was part of a poem that was written about me by a very special person.

Are you ever annoyed or distracted by them?

Yes, when they become overly long, multiple quotes/paragraphs, moving objects, and pictures are all distracting. I don't know that I would be annoyed, as I would presume this is who the person feels they are, and I always have the option to shut off the sig lines or ignore them.

How often do you think they should be changed?

I've had the first line almost since I started with Lit, the part about the poem was added in the Fall. Since both are special to me, I probably won't change them. I think it's up to the individual. Some change as their moods change, others keep them because it is a small snipet of who they are.

What do you like least about them?

Moving pictures, too many different colors.

At one point I posted a thread asking those with long sig lines the reason they felt they had to have such. Few responded but I remember 'debbiexxx' did and just wasnt aware that it killed teh flow of threads and in many ways discounted her posts in many eyes. She shortened it and not only did it look better but the thought she wanted to portray came through with greater clarity.

I have now turned sigs off because, in my opinion, many of the fresh(not newbie) people in the last month jumped on sigs and have either diatribes or pictures.

THe guidline I felt led to a sig that didnt intrude into the flow of a thread and allowed a post to stand on its own...That each post takes a certain amount of space, essentially the height of teh avatar, location, etc...a minimum size. If you sig line extends the height/length of your post when you p[ost a one or two line message; its too long.

Yeah, its a bit picky, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who skips over those with rampant sig lines. Post a giant pic and you can say whatever you want, few will read it.

Mine is a link to a poem I posted here at Lit, one that noone would read otherwise but might click and take a look.

I enjoy the various signature lines (similar to the way I enjoy the different avs). Some are very thought provoking, others bring me a sense of nostalgia as they remind me of songs and sayings from the past, and some are plain silly. They usually bring a clearer insight into the persona of the poster, so I don't mind them at all.

Additionally, I have noticed that more people have been reading my work since I added the link! Thanks everyone.:)

Personally, I enjoy reading the sig lines. I prefer mine to be short, one or two sentences, and most of mine are funny. (Or they TRY to be. )

I don't care for the very, very long ones. They do seem to distract me.

I like signature lines, too! Sometimes it says something about a person, and sometimes it's just something they threw up there. It always have to be serious, and unfortunately, I think that's what the Newbies are thinking: that it has to be this profound phrase with meaning and depth.

*laughs* Look at mine, for crying out loud! Nothing in depth about that, unless you're a Freudian.

The only signatures that I don't like are those that are longer than the person's post. THAT says something...

I've kind of been ignoring the sig lines lately. I haven't turned them off completely, but I haven't been putting one in mine for awhile.

I just think a statement doesn't make that big of an impact if you see it all the time.

Although I have to say there is one that I like, I think It's Ethiopian(?) Prince's. It says, if this comment offended you, I promise to listen to (somebodys?) tapes until I'm a better person. That cracks me up! :D

I get a kick out of a lot of sig lines. The ones I read that is... There are many that are just too long, have pics for links that take up way too much space. I like to keep mine short. mOst of the time it is an inside joke. THerefore I change it fairly often.

They are like answering maching messages short and sweet are beter so I can get to the meat of why I called.

I like ones that are just a couple of quick and simple lines. Huge pics I don't usually appreciate... and sometimes I find it annoying when people add links to their work in their sig. I mean, if I wanted to read a story, I'd be over in the story section! Still, it can come in handy...

Personally, I think one that reflects the thoughts of the user, without attacking others, is what makes a good sig line.
Are you ever annoyed or distracted by them?
Not too often, I do get a little ticked by anything that takes more scrolling than two other poster's entire replys, but that's because it means that I have to do alot more searching if I scroll back up to quote.
How often do you think they should be changed?
I think as often as the poster wants to, really. I mainly keep mine up for the duration of time that they suit my frame of mind.
What do you like least about them?
I don't like the ones that are large, using bright font colors and oversized text. I think that a text based signature, in basic black, with maybe a little bit of bold or italic font, where a message warrents it, is more than enough.

I mainly just think about the quote, or laugh if I find a joke funny. I don't really stop and read them to often. If there is a change to someone's sig line that I can pick up in scanning through the posts, I'll read it.
