Have things gone to far in the world of "laughing at stupid people"?

Is it just me, or is it getting to easy to do now?

I understand that many people are still shaken up by the events and that it will be a very long time indeed before terrible memories do not spring to mind at the mere mention of it for some people..... but this is just a little bit silly.

below is an article found at http://www.msnbc.com/news/749507.asp?cp1=1 i really hope it is not serious in its content.

May 9 — Some movie fans are blasting the next “Lord of the Rings” flick, charging that it exploits the World Trade Center tragedy. The next installment in the series is called “The Two Towers,” and a group calling itself Those Affected by September 11 is petitioning director Peter Jackson and studio New Line Cinema to change the name “to something less offensive."
“THE TITLE IS clearly meant to refer to the attacks on The World Trade Center,” notes the petition posted at petitiononline.com and signed by more than 1,200 people. “It is unforgivable that this should be allowed to happen.”

The title is actually the name of the second book in the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy on which the films are based, but even when this was pointed out to the petitioners, they maintained that the title of the film should still be changed.

Some people, however, left comments on the petition suggesting that they believe the petitioners are overreacting. “I think they should rename New York too, because every time I hear “New York” it makes me think of that day and it makes me cry,” noted one. “That and the words ‘world,’ ‘trade,’ and ‘center’ should be removed from our language as well.” ”

New Line didn’t respond to requests for comment, but Jackson has said that after the Sept. 11 attacks, he considered changing the name of the second film, but decided against it, saying, “Tolkien fans would kill us.”

I honestly would have thought it was a joke if it didn't come from a real news source (NBC)

I guess it still might be though

The bigger idiots are the LOTR fans who say that it shouldn't be changed because "The Tower ripped off the name from Tolkein"

Morons.

Oh, not so much stupid as congenital cry babies and attention seekers.

I think what surprises me is that there were only 1200 signatures on the petition.

People like that make me want to point and laugh. If only in the hopes that it will provoke them to the point that they'll seek the mental health counseling they so desperately need.

What a bunch of fucking idiots. OMG. I'm not even going to compliment the concept by explaining how moronic it is.

I suppose we should simply remove the date 9/11 from the calander.

Sometimes, remembering is actually a good thing. I know I will never forget and would never want to.

As far as the Tolkien Trilogy is concerned....yeppers, idiots!

I think it is a case of "never underestimate the power of stupid people in groups"

Damn right we would!

Trouble is, the majority of folks aren't familiar with The Hobbit and the trilogy, which is sad. Just unfortunate timing.

I wouldn't call them idiots, just ignorant. Both look the same on the outside, though.

What scares me the most is the person leading these stupid people. No telling what they will do next.

How easily some are convinced of the most idiotic ideas :(

I would call them idiots. If they were just ignorant they would be capable of learning and growth. Once people like this get an idea in their head it can never be changed.

I had never thought of it that way.... not a bad point

The majority are capable of learning.....but if they don't know, they don't know and assume. That's called ignorance.

Nope, if they don't know and assume anyway, they are idiots. If they don't know and try to find out, but are told or taught incorrectly and assume that they are correct then they are ignorant.
