I have a story, and it's a lovely one that I'd like to finish. It's just that they're to the point where they're fucking and it's, well, boring. Getting started is the most difficult part of the whole sex stuff, I found that I don't really care how tab A gets into either slots B, C, or D. The interesting part is the people themselves.

*sigh*

I will valiantly move forward! I will finish this story!

No, no, no!

Sex is not boring. Writing about it can be, but shouldn't.

Necrophilia however is dead boring, whereas incest is only relatively boring.

I think I'll go back to sleep now...

I know what you mean, KM. The introduction is fun to write, people meet.. tension.. little flirting, games, tension building up.. but then you get to THE moment.. and sometimes you just get this feeling like "OK..sigh.. here we go again".

Well.. that's the way how I see it anyway. The people, personalities, psychology are the interesting parts to write.. for me.

To be honest.. in RL it sometimes feels like that too. Well... not always of course, but the "game" is fun. Every now and again sex can be a real anti-climax.

Then again.. sometimes it's not.. fortunately :D

Local Soapbox king weighing in here. No don't worry, no anti-government rhetoric coming up. (Wish I could think of a way to blame this on the government, but I can't)

I personally enjoy writing the plot part of the story more than the sex part too. But I still enjoy writing about a new sexual situation. If I get bored writing then I have to go back and question my writing. Maybe I'm just making it boring by not writing it right.

For KM, I'm sure that is not the case, but with me it usually is.

Some stories just don't need lot's of sex in them. Some stories would be dragged down by a four page litany about Harry bumping uglies with Sally. Some stories cry out for it too.

So I think if the story needs a good detailed sex scene then it won't be boring to write. But if the story is better without it then it might be boring because it hurts the story.

Just my half-penny's worth.

Then put the brakes on.

KM-

One of the most fun moments of sex is when you're not certain about the next step. You don't know if he's really ready to go from the kiss to the touching. You don't know if the glance you just got from the woman at the end of the bar was meant for you, or...?

If writing about sex is becoming too A-B-C, then put the brakes on...slow it down...interrupt it...make the building burn down, a storm comes, they'll die if they don't stop. Don't take the boring road.

Then you have more to write and a new scenario to take them through. For the reader, it will be, "Will they do it this time? Or will they do it the same way? Or...?"

If you get to a point where the act is becoming
His <adjective> <sexual part> is <adverb> with <adjective>. Then downplay that part, make the getting there more fun and delightful...or dark and foreboding, depending on where the Muse takes you.

KM, take the road less traveled..."And he decided to become a priest! For fuck's sake! Who does he think he is? Goddamnit! How the Hell am I gonna find a new fuckbuddy at my age! Shit!"

Taking another sip of her beer, her girlfriend listened closely, reading between the lines, then chuckled softly to herself, "I have an idea. Are you free for dinner?"

I love you guys.

You're right. If the sex is that hard to write it must not belong there. Hell, I've got three pages of foreplay. I just figured I'd give the poor guy a break and let him get a little before his ex-girlfriend busts in on them. Nothing quite like seeing your mother getting some, huh?

"Hey, Mom, I was just..."

Nothing like seeing your ex's cock in your Mom. "Oh, hello dear...~pant, pant~...we're almost done."

hehehe.

BDSM can be painfully boring. Mature sex gets old after a while. Non-consensual is awfully one sided. Interracial sex sends out mixed messages. Bestiality has gone to the dogs. I have a funny feeling about using sex in humor and satire, and Public sex could be subject to privatization.

~~Excuses herself to go beat a dead horse.~~

Obviously, boring sex should NOT be written. If you don't get hot while writing it, then save it. Write on something non-sexual for a week. Spend time with your children, or someone else's. After a week of that, ANY sex is hot!

Seriously, wait a while. If what you're writing seems uninspiring to you, as the author, then wait until you can be inspired by your own writing.

The challenge is to take a common subject and make it fresh by presenting it in a different context, or with a little different flavor to it.
Our palette is words, and like a paint palette, the choices of combinations are infinite and can change the entire result. Like music, the combination of the familiar with the new make the piece work or not work.

Communicate. When necessary, use words! ;)

Well, I finished it off, not too shabbily I hope. The story is pseudoposted for now! That means it's approved but didn't quite make the list. I prefer to think that Laurel loved it so much she has chosen not to share. *grins*

WOW! I am glad I am not the only one ....

aAfter reading this discussion I am glad to see I am not the only one being WAY more interested in the evolving of a scene/encounter of lovers than the physical act itself. I am finding it increasingly hard to finish my stories lately - I have 5 sitting on my computer - all the romance - fun - mature - and whatever else feelings beautifully lined out - the plot not bad (imho), the descriptions vivid and everything just perfect .. only that now my characters should have SEX .. and I can't seem to be bothered to describe it - damn , I mean, how many ways of "poppen" (german slang) are there???

Anyway - I hope to finally finish - on my usual standard level (that is actuallythe worst bit of it, not to just toss down a few lines that sound like I did copy them out of another standard work). I feel freshly motivated after seeing others are struggling woith the same problems ...

Maybe we could found an "erotica authors bored with describing sexual acts" therapy group??? ;)

I like it Hecate!

We could all write our stories right up to the boring sex part then swap them around to each other for some fresh input on The Act itself. ;)

what kind of group therapy did you have in mind? Naked regression, may be some role play? Hmm, I could be talked into joining it with the proper incentives.

Killer..
Why don't you skip the sex scene and post it to the non-erotic section?

It's somewhat foolish to write in a scene you don't want to unless it furthers the plot.. isn't it?

Huh-huh. She said "input." Mmm. hmm. heh-heh. Heh.

I'm right where Hecate is. As the French say, "the best part of the affair is climbing the staircase" (but they say it in French). I don't know how many stories I've built up and abandoned. Even when I finish them, I get responses that say "your stories take too long to get things going." Sigh.

Just recently, I started one IN the aftermath, right AFTER the sex, to focus on the intimate pillow-talk, so that I can't focus too hard on the preliminaries, again. We'll see if I can finish THAT one. Hell, I might have to put sex in it to keep it interesting- wouldn't that be a switch?

What a neat idea, Cockatoo. To start a story just after the sex. You know I've usaly found that is when some of the best comunication takes place. You've gotten the urgency of the situation taken care of, and now you can focus on the rest of her. I've said it many times, but it bears repeating, Good sex is the product of much study and practice, and is rarely as good the first time as it is the thirtyth time. The new and diferent does have its atractions, though. It's a new disicpline to study and master.

Avoiding Ennui

My two pennyworth...

My approach to writing erotica is to make the characters have a reason for having sex, other than merely responding to their physical impulses.

I tend to write about deceitful relationships, partly because the sense of sin adds to the naughtiness of the story, but also to add reasons (using sex as a weapon I guess).

Context is everything, otherwise I think erotica can get boring.

What do you guys and gals think?

Thats the whole difference between erotica and just porn. Hopefully what we do here is to give our characters reasons to fuck and then do it with some pazizz. Porn is boring, one reason why sites like wetlands.com are taking off is that they have real folks fucking because its fun.

Sometimes the people can be teh best part of sex.

If the people are the most interestig part then focus on how they are reacting to what's being done to them. Sex is 75% psychological. The person you are with can be more arousing then how good they are with you. And I don't just mean physical attraction. Build up the charachters and how they want each other. Then make the sex emotional instead of just a raw fuck. Raw fucks make fun stories, but sometimes emotional involvement is all the more arousing.

KM,

I was facing the same problem a little while back and I'll tell you how I fixed it. I wrote several stories that were not erotic at all. I poured myself into writing them and I feel that they are really pretty good.

It helped. The last time I wrote I actually enjoyed the sex scenes again.

I guess my mind just needed some variety, so from now on I'm going to make sure to devote time to my other writing as well. I'm hopeing that this will keep me from burning out on the sex scenes.

THATS why I never finished those!

I have entire notebooks full of stories that just fizzle out when it gets to the sex part! I never realized that I am a "stair climbing" addict! I get to know my characters too well, then I like them so much I don't want them having mundane sex. I'll have to think really hard to go back and finish those novellas with lovemaking worthy of the lovers!

I do all my writing with pen and paper and hate typing it into the PC. Maybe I'll put one of those voice recognition programs on my Christmas list. Do they work? Which one is best? Otherwise, I'd love to swap those tales around and see how everybody else finishes them. Oh, that would be great to get acquainted with everyone else's characters then come up with my own ending.

That could be a great contest. Somebody come up with a seriously challenging plot and leave it dangling in a rough spot. Whoever finishes it most admirably wins. Is there something like that here? I don't mean a chain story.

Clearly thou most be jesting sex boring. Please say it's not so? Try not being able to have sex at all but only read about it. :(

Have you ever seen a couple of Beach Balls making love? I'm speaking about my other half and myself if we weren't so overweight it would be funny but alas tis frusterating.

OPs Sex??

Is it easier to write about other peoples' sexual experiences?

If we all sort of traded around when we got to the "dirty deed" part, wouldn't we ALL be writing the sex thing nearly all the time?
