Trump tries to distance himself from Sidney Powell —
whom he once wanted as special counsel

On Dec. 19, Powell and former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn
tried to get the president to appoint Powell as a special counsel -
(Costa and Woodward reported) granting her wild goose chase the imprimatur
and resources of the federal government. Trump was inclined to do so, telling
those gathered in the Oval Office that evening that “at least she’s giving me a
chance.”

Only Giuliani’s intervention derailed the idea.

Hugh Hewitt, of Salem Radio Network (Texas"Christian" broadcaster) interviewed Trump

Trump:
“She didn’t work for me,” Trump replied. “She was a lawyer that was representing
General Flynn and some others, and she never officially — now she was on our side
from the standpoint, I guess, you know, from the standpoint of what she was doing,
but she didn’t work for me as per se. She worked for General Flynn and others. "

On Dec. 16 of last year, Trump tweeted about the idea that fraud was committed
through voting machines, the heart of Powell’s argument.

At one point, Trump tweeted that Sidney Powell was part of a “truly great team”
of his lawyers — helped to burnish Powell’s credibility with donors.

(Trump’s attorneys would later say Powell was acting on her own and not as part
of their team.)

All about the money! - Trump's national security official, Gen. Mike Flynn and Sidney
Powell stopped talking, after she raised $14 million dollars, grifting for "Election fraud"
effort.

Sidney Powell raised sums from donors inspired by her fight to reverse the outcome
of the vote. But by April, questions about where the money was going — and how much
there was — were helping to sow division between Powell and other leaders of her
new nonprofit, Defending the Republic.

Records reviewed by The Washington Post show that Defending the Republic
raised more than $14 million

The group’s financial statement, publicly filed last month in Florida, shows
the organization raised $14.9 million between Dec. 1, 2020, and July 31.

In a phone call with Wood that Wood surreptitiously recorded, Byrne claimed
that Patrick Byrne, Michael Flynn, and Flynn’s brother Joseph Flynn quit the
group in April after Powell refused to allow an audit of Defending the Republic’s
accounts.

As Powell pressed claims that the election was stolen from Trump, the president
on Wednesday pardoned her most famous client, former national security adviser
Michael Flynn.

Powell also launched a fundraising effort that she said would support her work
to expose fraud in the election, writing online that “millions of dollars must be
raised to defend the Republic.”
