With the passing of time people have become less interested in the loss of Columbia, particularly as the prospect of fresh TV meat looms large in Iraq.

So it doesn't surprise me that NASA and the investigative board are starting to release "new" details...data showing an attempt to override autopilot over California, even though this same data was said before to be useless; acknowledgement that the crew likely knew several minutes beforehand they were in trouble; and later today, the release of a "revised" timeline of the last minutes.

I suspect that one day we'll see or hear about the last four minutes of the flight video being "recovered" even though we've been told it was burnt.

It seems to me that our institutions would be far more credible if they said from the outset "We have lots of data, are analysing it all and will release everything that doesn't impinge on National Security in due course."...instead of spoon feeding us with malleable PR statements.

Is the collective psyche really that fragile? Or do people just not want to hear the truth?

or is it because the American attention span is, what are we talking about?

btw lance, great song in your sig line.

Considering how this thread is dropping like a lead weight, I'm betting the latter. Media outlets overload us with useless data, interspersed with trivial nonsense. It's hard enough to fit hard facts in that mess, and when it doesn't attract the ratings/viewers/sponsors as the latest reality TV bit, why should they bother?

People get what they ask for. The government assumes the majority of people don't care, so they gloss over details and keep the important stuff to themselves, releasing it only upon demand.

Heads should roll

The same right-wing politicians who want to impose a very stringent standard of "personal responsibility" upon us do not want to be held accountable for any of their misdeeds. The shuttle explosion was the result of cutbacks in funding at NASA, inadequate maintenance and repair, and the ignoring of several urgent warnings from safety engineers. Many heads should have rolled at high levels of government-- NASA top management, Congressional oversight committees, and the White House. They are all guilty of seven counts of manslaughter, in my opinion-- gross negligence resulting in another person's death.

I'm curious what you're basing your initial statement on.

I base my statement of waning interest with the waning interest in the topic here, the reduced coverage of the matter on television and the relegation of newsprint accounts to back sections instead of front page.

Once the initial shock & sideshow bob horror is gone...nobody seems to care what happened or how it happened.

Redwave was saying the same things the day of the crash he is now...despite his being right then and now, on Day One everyone jumped him like Britney Spears spreadeagled at an Airforce Training Academy...today *phhhrrnnnt*...nada, despite the fact that the truth is now starting to emerge.

I believe the powers that be think people would not be as quick to point fingers if the crew was thought to have died immediately. A slow death gets people upset. It's all timing.

What gets me is how Wall Srtreet / Enron etc. got shoved under the rug. Where is Ken Lay :D
I'll bet if Clinton were Prez. the media would be turning rocks to see how he was involved.

I read newspapers from other countries to try and get a little more than what Americas media tells me. The problem as with everything is trying to seperate BS from the truth.

Agreed....the latest revisions have the crew spinning out of control over California. Shades of that 2 minute fall to earth transcript of the Challenger crew reading the Lords Prayer.
