Shrink Pics

go here

or find a program for manipulating pics. i use corel paint shop pro, but there are many out there that will help you resize your pics

there's another thread that someone asked this, has a link for (i think) a freeby program

I've used Photoshop, and ACDSee (you can DL free trial versions. Use it forever, just click the "Remind Me Later" button on the occassional pop-up register/purchase reminder). Photoshop is the more powerful program but ACDSee can be used FREE!

InfranView is also a freebie I use, but not so powerful an editor.

About.com has a review article about many FREE photo editors HERE

Hope that helps, Serene!

the GIMP
its needs GTK+

together they work out to about 15megs and can do pretty much anything photoshop can do
its a little cumbersome but you get used to it

There's a sticky on this in the Darkroom Lounge. I just added a post about JPG quality settings that one can use to shrink images to the right file size without shrink the image size.

As for programs, I'll second IrfanView. Also, if you have a new computer, you could try Paint.NET. It's bigger than IrfanView, but is more powerful and has a friendlier interface.

(Gimp and ImageMagick are cool too, but if you could easily figure them out, you would have been knowledgeable enough not to have to ask your question in the first place.)

The thing is that for resizing, while almost any image editing program can do it, the process is often cumbersome and they are usually limited to GIF, JPG, and their native format if you need to convert the format as well as resize.

IRFANVIEW on the other hand is an image management program that will read and write virtually every image format, essentially reduces resizing problems to typing in the desired dimension(s), and can do batch processing to resize, rename, and/or convert the format of an entire folder full of of images with one command.

Irfanview isn't as capable as any full featured image editor, but then that isn't what it's designed to be. PaintShop Pro is the only program I've used that comes close to Irfanview's management capabilities, but it's browse and other mangement features are afterthoughts added to an image editing program rather than the primary purpose of the program.

Gimp is done by the GNU project, it supports most everything I've noticed

but I do hear irfanview is very good
I've yet to try it though

GIMP is a very good image editor -- and IIRC there is a MAC version which Irfanview doesn't have.

However, GIMP is more program than most people need for simple resizing and format conversion but those kinds of tasks are precisely what Irfanview is designed and optimized for. Irfanview is very, very good at what it's designed to do, but if you're looking for an image editor, you'll be disappointed -- actual "editing" is essentially limited to basic brightness, contrast, and color adjustment functions.

Try www.photobucket.com - It's FREE

You upload your pictures to there and then can size them accordingly, they give you links to post and then you just include those in your post et voila!!!

Alternatively, if you open them in MS Photo Editor or even paint you can chance the sizings there too.

Good luck
