This afternoon in work we had a problem.

One of the patients was having difficulty breathing. The R.N. had called for and the patient had received a breathing treatment which didn't manage the problem. In fact the patient was getting worse. I was walking past the room when I heard about the problem even as the Charge Nurse was talking about calling the Response Team.

I stepped into the room and took a look at the patient. He is well known to me, he doesn't have Cancer but instead has a genetic blood disease. He was in rough shape. He was panting and freaking out. We're talking a full blown panic attack. I asked the R.N. a couple of questions about what was happening and she deigned to answer. (She is an Agency Nurse and feels that Aides are worthless.)

I stepped over to the bed and got the patientsd attention even as I stepped on his Oxygen Line. I started talking to him and getting him to breath. It took me a few minutes and some sharp words to get his attention focused on me but I did it. I got him to start calming down and start focusing on his breathing. After a few short minutes his breathing and his heart rate started slowing down. After another couple of minutes his Saturation level started coming up.

By the time the Charge Nurse and his M.D. came into the room under full sail he was breathing normaly and his color was improving. The patients R.N. was close to freaking out and the M.D. was smiling and thanking me for intervening.

After a bit the R.N. asked me by what magic I had been able to get the patient breathing correctly. I told her it wasn't magic, it was knowledge and common sense. It seems she doesn't believe me.
