To my knowledge, most nations refuse to pay ransom to kidnappers or hijackers. The theory being that paying will increase the frequency of such attacks and may not succeed in freeing hostages.

I considered adding a third option to the poll, knowing how most detest an either/or, black/white, characterisation of anything, but....no....yes or no, no contingencies.

I thought even you pointed out that it's the insurance companies that would pay the ransom (based on private people-private company agreements to cover just this sort of thing). What's the relevance and purpose of your poll? More witch hunting?

And, with your stated views on the sanctity of life, what would you do to ensure the captain survives whatever happens, hot shot?

Do you mean in this current pirate case, or in general?

And what do you mean by "The United States"? The government? Or individual persons or companies from the United States?

Only as long as it takes to get that captain to safety, then blow the suckers out of the water.

I am a firm believer in the idea of making one pay for ones crimes.

You take an American Hostage then you're going to get zeroed. You kill an American then you're going to get zeroed.

Yeah it may be politics through terror but it will deter scum like this.

Then again as far as I'm concerned Somalia needs to be visited by a large fleet of aircraft at high altitude dropping Lazy Dogs.

I suppose there could be a dozen ways to ask the question; I thought of several, but rather than simplify the question, it became more complex.

Not that you will view the effort objectively, but I did a little search beforehand and decided not to use the results, however....

A Spanish fishing boat seized by pirates off the Somali coast and held for six days has been freed after a $1.2m ransom was paid, a maritime official has said.

The Indian Navy apprehends pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Dec. 13, 2008, arresting 23 who had threatened a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden.

NEW DELHI - The Indian navy captured 23 pirates who threatened a merchant vessel in the lawless waters of the Gulf of Aden and a German naval helicopter thwarted another attack Saturday on a freighter being chased by speedboats off Yemen.

You won't like this but my original search key words were: muslims pirates hijackers ransom...

It is my suspicion that Islamic terrorists are the ones benefiting from the millions of dollars in ransom paid thus far.

Go ahead, chew on that.

Chew on what? Talk about fishing.

I don't believe we should pay ransom. Certainly, I can't speak for the families of the captive. I hope I am never in that position.

But if I were in the Captains position, I would still be against it.

The ransom should be delivered late at night by SEALS coming out of the water. Knives are the best form of delivery.

Nor is the United States considering paying ransom. The company owning the ship took out insurance that included this scenario--not even an American insurance company, I don't think. Why is anyone even talking about the United States paying ransom other than feeding Amicus's Sore Loser fishing expedition?

Maybe you could go wave your gun in the air some more, and they'll let him go.

btw: how in the hell do you justify your "all life is sacred" gig with your love of violence?

Oh my god in heaven...the world is coming to and end for sure...I agree with SR!!!!

It's a Dutch owned ship, flagged in the US, probably insured by Llyods.

It's so easy to get a psycotic response around here, it really is getting boring.

No, wait, I think that's a good question. How does one square this "sanctity of life" position with knee-jerk "kill them" positions? You're not the only one here who seems so inconsistent on that point.

Step 1: Free the captain by whatever means possible.

Step 2: Visit several of the coastal towns known to support pirates with Spectres and JDAMS.

Step 3: Establish a CAP of AH-64's to 'identify' pirate mother ships.

Step 4: Arm ships crews just in case someone didn't get the memo.

Step 5: Give all State Department employees a lollypop. :D

On the remote possibility that you really want to understand....

Human life is the primary value, not only the sustenance and nourishment of it, but in defending it.

One can cherish life and still use whatever violence is necessary to protect and defend it, without compromising or contradicting ones' ethical foundation.

I think the world is looking on is disbelief as four terrorists are standing off the US Navy and the Commander in Chief says not a word.

But, then, you expect that from me, right?:)

I notice you didn't answer the question, although you dodging it doesn't surprise me in the least.

Since you are not smart enough to get it why bother.
Does she have a clue what sarcasm is?
Low IQ and psycotic all at once, so sad.

Still dodging.

I'm pretty sure you don't have an answer to my question, so you'd just rather throw out rather silly insults, hoping I'll take the bait and attack back.

It's not working.

So...how do you justify it?

Its an interesting thought, at least to me, that they're still able to quite successfully get onto these ships and do what they do, with warships from 20 nations in the area patrolling the ocean to try and prevent this...

Have you seen the sea? It's not exactly a small place.

The interresting thought, to me, is: Why the hell doesn't the ship owners or charteres hire some guns for security on those routes?

I like Ami's version of defense.
In self defense I would use deadly force, and have.
I would also use it to defend someone else.

Sadly, it is exactly what I expect form the spineless in chief.
