Should kids be allowed to walk to school?

When I was a child, I walked to school. So did all my friends. It was just the normal thing to do. Nothing bad ever happened, except for the occasional fist fight between kids or getting into some mischief like breaking sprinkler heads or that sort of thing. Nobody ever tried to grab me or any of my friends off the street.

Today, it seems as if 90% of parents are completely paranoid to allow their kids to walk to school. Line ups of cars in front of schools in the morning and afternoon stretch for blocks. Some parents even walk to the school to escort their children home (see below).

Is this trend necessary? The odds of a kidnapping in most neighborhoods are infinitesimal. Is it even healthy, or does it make the kids paranoid of strangers as well as contribute to childhood obesity?

My children walked to school from the first day with me. When they were 7 they walked to school with friends or with a group of kids on the walking school bus.

When they were 10 they wanted to ride their bikes to school and had to pass a bike safety course run by the local police community constable which included a safety check of the bike and their ability to ride safely and knowledge of the road rules.

It's amazing what they learn just walking in their community and talking as they walk. I think it is important but I do understand that some parents have to work and drop them off for convenience or peace of mind.

I loved walking to school and chatting with my friends.

3 schools are close to my home but most kids ride buses or mom takes them. That's becuz Gramma and Gramps moved to Florida and brought their numnutz adult disabled children with them. my kids walk. I walked with them until they were 10, because there are some roads to cross. it's a 20 minute walk and makes sure their brains are awake before they hit the books. most kids seem to walk around here, but it's a small town with plenty of crossing places.

It's the Walter Mitty Syndrome. Lt conjures a fantasy scenario of what he would have done and never has to worry about the details of what would have happened, it he really did any of it. for years my youngest rode a scooter to school instead of walking. he literally wore out several sets of wheels, and had a few interesting injuries from tricks & stunts.
he has a bike and he's passed his cycling proficiency, but the roads aren't wide enough for cars & bikes to share safely. I know too many people who've been knocked off, and boys tend to sneak off their helmet as soon as mum is out of sight.

I used to bike to school 5th-8th grade. Usually it was with my friend who lived across the street. Never once got kidnapped. I see plenty of kids walking to and from school in my neighborhood as well. Most are in groups.

The news likes to scare us with everything under the sun, but the real deal is; most people are decent and would never think to hurt your kid.
