Should I continue these stories?

I have been posting a series of stories. They are soap-opera-like continuing stories with police drama mysteries and lots of sex added in. I've gotten some good comments and votes, but there is clearly a group of people intentionally bad-voting my stories to drive the numbers down. i can see this happening and can see the way they are doing it all at once, which bespeaks intent.

Please take a look and let me know if you like these kinds of stories and if I should continue posting them, or just finish the latest series (Case of the Murdered Lovers) and be done with it.

Whether you should continue writing anything is a matter of whether it's worth it to you. Do you enjoy writing even if the feedback or votes aren't what you'd hoped/wanted? Do you just enjoy writing and putting the stories out there? Do you have more stories to tell, and want to tell them?

You can always turn off voting, or anonymous comments, so you have some control over the type of feedback you receive.

I haven't read your stories, so I know I'm probably not giving quite the answer you want, but I always find it odd that people ask a bunch of total strangers whether they should continue doing something.

Lots of us have "voting it down" trolls hanging off us. If down ratings really, really bother you, you might stop posting stories (in which case your trolls have won). If you can grit your teeth through that and appreciate serving the readers who do follow you--and you enjoy writing the stories--then continue doing so. You are not alone in having a non-fan club as well.

Another possibility is to turn off comments and voting altogether. That would top the trolls, but preclude any feedback what so ever. I get the same treatment, as do many other good story writers. Take it as a sign that you write well enough to be 1 bombed from your position. I'm sitting 1st, 2nd and 4th in the top list for my category, but I know once they hit the 12 month list, I'll be 1 bombed down to a level the whiners feel good with.

If you have a following, write for them and fuck the others.;)

I took a quick look at your catalog. Your scores are not terrible, and the two most recent stories (which are also among the lowest scores) have only been up a few days. You are most likely going to see an uptick once a sweep wipes out some of the 1-bombs. I also see that you bounce around from one category to another. Nothing wrong with that as a writer, but it subjects you to different audiences with different scoring standards and, in some cases, scoring agendas.

I appreciate everyone's input. I would like to ask for y'all to check out some of my stories and give me some feedback. Are they paced correctly, too fast or too slow? Is the content good, or would you like to see more (or less) sex and more (or less) drama and story?

Input is appreciated so that I can make these stories the best possible experience for the readers.

posting a link to your stories in your SIG would help.

You're also posting some of your stories in Loving Wives, the most negative and fractured category on the site.

The thing about Literotica is that, for whatever reason, we don't have a separate category for the "cheating" fetish. So people who write those stories hide them in Loving Wives. This leads to flame wars, because there are others who only want to see wives loving their husbands in that category. And this leads to it being a safe venue for trolls who don't bother to read the story except in the most cursory fashion. "Someone's cheating! Automatic 1-bomb!" "Someone's not cheating! Automatic 1-bomb!"

So first off, I agree with everyone else: write if you want to, don't if you don't. Care only about yourself; if you're in it for the popularity, you're already in for disappointment. But second: stick to Erotic Couplings instead. Posting in LW is just asking for trouble. :(

I've never read any of your stories, though I suspect they've been posted in the Loving Wives section. Are the comments from very angry people outraged at the infidelity of a man's wife? I hope so, it'll mean the stories are worth reading. Good stories stir people's emotions. The bad ones will be ignored by the readership and won't leave any sort of a comment

I like to know people's opinions about the stories I like, so it's always a disappointment when the comments are disabled. I often read the comments first then decide whether or not the stories are worth reading or not. Angry death threats towards the author - and remember, these are words by people whose emotions are riled by the author's stories - to me, are a positive recommendation. I like it when people are angered by fiction.

A word of advice: Don't let the people who leave angry comments influence you into toning down the content of your stories

I don't think death threats are a good thing in the comments section, not at all.

I think my problem with the trolls are that they do their trolling in organized packs, "1-bombing" all at once as a group for maximum effect. IMHO the Literotica guys should not allow anonymous voting at all, one should have to have a name and email attached to their votes. I would also run a routine once a day that would check for people's voting habits... if "1-bombing" becomes apparent (and it will), then the person loses their voting privileges and maybe their membership outright.

Except for the fact that the trolls artifically lower scores and keep good stories out of the 4.5 "H" range (having the "H" gets more viewers), I'm not worried about the trolls, except when they make death threats (I've already reported two trolls to the Literotica guys for over-the-top comments, including threats).

Note to everyone: I am at this time asking for feedback on the stories from those who like to read and to write stories, so that I can make my stories better. While I appreciate the other comments, I get the message and further re-hashing would IMHO be counter-productive to what I'm seeking.

TIA,
WW

The "Literotica guys" are Laurel and Manu who apparently run this as a shoestring labor of love. Manu handles the techie stuff and Laurel handles the story stuff. I suspect they do not have the spare time in their days to monitor "people's voting habits."

And they do an excellent job! I do computer programming myself, so it is easy for me to suggest writing a routine to weed out the 1-bombers. I'm not asking for the voting habits to be monitored, either; indeed, that would be too much work for anyone. Just a couple of simple things would really help the writers defeat the 1-bombers' evil intentions... :)

Hey WW

You have nothing to prove. Your 'Todd and Melina' series is fantastic and the scores show it. I haven't read this series you speak of as it doesn't sound 'my cup of tea'. Could be others feel the same? I say stick with it, but accept that not all stories appeal to all readers. If you care about popularity, stick to genres that get the most votes. Simples.

I tried reading "Case of the Murdered Chessplayer Ch. 02" and found it unfathomable. I had no idea who the main character was or what was going on. I went back to "Case of the Murdered Chessplayer Ch. 01" and I gave up reading not even halfway through the first page.

Perhaps I am the wrong audience. Regardless, here are my thoughts on your story.

You bring in character after character without adequately describing them. At the end of scene 1, you have mentioned:
* Todd - all you tell us about him is that he is a stud with a big dick
* Jack - all you tell us about him is that he is dead and was Todd's older brother
* Ned - all you tell us about him is that he is a "piece of dog shit"
* Uncle Don - all you tell us about him is that he would enjoy fucking the girl Todd is fucking
* Police Detective Teresa Croyle - you tell us she had an affair with Jack, is/was married and is lonely

Scene 2 is the murder scene, where you mention 4 men, a women who has shapely legs and the victim.

Scene 3 starts with mentions of the Narrator, Tanya Perlman, The Cabin, Laura, Melina, a visitor at her house on the hill, the narrator's the narrator's "beautiful future wife" (Laura?) and Dr. Wellman.

At that point, I stopped. I was overwhelmed with characters and could see no reason to believe that I would ever care about any of them.

Scene 1 is a sex scene. As I had no emotional involvement with the people having sex, I didn't find it erotic. The narrator Todd didn't seem to have any emotional involvement with the woman he was fucking. She was a living blow up doll to him. He was far more concerned about his big dick. I found Todd's attitude towards Teresa Croyle to be a turn off.

Scene 3 is a post-sex scene. Again, I had no emotional involvement with the people who just had sex and they didn't appear to have any emotional involvement with each other. The narrator comes across as an awful person as he is apparently cheating on his fiancee with a married woman while not divorced from another woman.

So if you want me to read your story, I would suggest:
* Introducing your characters more slowly
* Making me care about the ones you have introduced. If a character isn't likeable, it will be hard to get me to care about him or her
* Before two characters have sex, getting me emotional involved in their relationship

the stories in contests are swept, and i think - although i'm not entirely sure - the sweeps sometimes effect existing stories, too.

Just don't even bother trying. They don't give a shit about authors or helping them here and they condone and even encourage mean comments. There is no way in hell the story numbers are correct. If your numbers say 10 000, then the reality is maybe 5 or 6 people clicked on your story and posters are used to bump up the numbers. It's the only motivation they have here.

wtf?

Or set up an alt account for posting LW stories. You'll still get 1-bombed on LW but at least they won't come over to hit the rest of your work as well.

That happens to me every single story. I even have taken the mean, rude suggestions and tried to use them to improve and still no matter how proud I was I got slammed but good. I spend a lot of time on my stories too. The stories I have written have taken at least 2 months of full time 40 hour a week effort. Its too much to ask the "Powers to Be" to put a stopper on the assholes but somehow admin feels powerless or lazy or who knows what. It is pretty clear they don't give a shit about authors so the abuse will never stop.

i've clicked on four stories at random on your submissions page and didn't find one comment. either i fluked it and clicked ones that have no comments or you've deleted them.

i appreciate the time and effort and nurturing that goes into the writing process, and yes i understand how let down and angry you might feel when someone is less than appreciative about your work. thing is, nobody asks you to submit to the site; you don't get paid; you don't have to pay to be here.

and what you won't get is any change in attitude from anyone by complaining about it all the time.

just by submitting stories here you're vulnerable to all manner of attacks. so what? that's what people are like.
