Should I be replying/responding to commentors?

Wait. Ariel was in the tempest too??? Dang, mermaids live a long time! I wonder if that beach was where she first met Sebastian? ;-)

The quote gave me flashbacks! I remember the uproar amongst my classmates (aged 11 I believe) at the line “Where the bee sucks, there suck I”. Expecting us to learn that without snickering every time we had to say it was just insanity!
And I won’t even mention the other phallus controversy Ariel found herself part of. No sir. Nuh uh! :censored:

(Snopes.com totally discredits the urban myth. Although they focus on whether the artist was disgruntled or not a whole lot more than whether it’s a penis. I’m fine with the “not disgruntled” part, but having doubts on the “I didn’t notice” portion. I have one reader who delights in pointing out tiny details that he thinks I got wrong, and doesn't say if he likes the story or not. In one story that a lot of readers enjoyed, he estimated how long the couple would have been dating from Halloween where they connected, and gleefully informed me that they couldn't have been enjoying the colorful fall foliage together because he thought it would have been too late in the season to see any leaves. I never bother responding. When I see a comment from him, I always wonder what he gets out of picking a story apart. Guess it takes all kinds.
Sounds like that "OverlyCritical" person found you too.

No. This is another critic who seems to get his jollies by going over stories with a fine tooth comb, looking for anything he can point out. No surprise, OverlyCritical has showed me his claws more than once. Lately, I just ignore them, and hope they find something else to sink their teeth into, so they can get off on picking another story apart.

Yeah, middle school teachers ought to be more savvy. 🤣.

We could have a whole discussion about what i think Ariel is (Shakespeare not Disney).

You might think it's Ariel pinned to a tree, but step back and look at it again. You've let your knowledge of what it really is get in the way of not seeing a good old dick pic against a blue background!
It’s art. If it is what you guys think, maybe it’s a boy Alien Because there is some kind of bug busting out of it! And blue is my favorite color. 🤣

I reply now and then to comments I feel engaged with the story. I also tend to respond to emails more than comments.
I don't reply to trolls or negative comments or people browbeat me for my writing style or grammar & syntax.
Like everyone here, I do this for free, I get some help from a few editors, who like me do it for free. So trolls can go suck a lemon and read something else if they don't like my stories ;)

with the exception of one story which I wrote to troll the trollers I never respond to comments. I do respond to feedback if the author leaves an email address.

my story to troll trollers has over 300 comments. They’re a fun read if you’re bored. The story is, “you only think you’re in control”

For the most part, I only reply to the stupid ones who make a comment that reflects their lack of understanding to some element of the story. I correct the comment by citing the actual written part being critiqued in error. I do this primarily in the the hope that the erroneous comment will not confuse / impact other readers and their own comments or understanding of the story. The need doesn't come up very often though.

Now that comments take several hours to post it’s no fun responding to them. You’re no longer engaging the commenter.
